C-SPAN announced that students in San Diego and Carlsbad are big winners in the network’s 21st annual StudentCam competition.

Students explored issues that were most important to them and their communities with topics that ranged from climate to education to health care.

C-SPAN received more than 1,700 entries from nearly 3,500 students in 42 states and Washington D.C.

Harper Haden and Helena de la Houssaye, both students at San Diego Unified School District’s Correia Middle School, took second place, receiving $1,500 for the documentary “One Pill Can Kill,” about the effects of fentanyl.

The documentary will air on C-SPAN on at 3:50 a.m. PST April 9 and throughout the day.

Daniel Steinhauer, also a student at Correia Middle, received an honorable mention and $250 for the documentary “Preservation of Our National Parks.”

Devin Mingardi, Vincent Chase, and Wesley Robson, students at Community Montessori in Carlsbad, received an honorable mention. They will get $250 for the documentary, “The Price of Life: America’s Healthcare Crisis.”

“Through in-depth research and interviews with an array of topical and technical experts, you have crafted impactful short stories that capture issues of wide public interest and importance,” said C-SPAN’s Director of Education Relations Craig McAndrew, who congratulated the students in a statement.

“Your documentaries set a very high bar for future StudentCam filmmakers, and you should be proud knowing your work will inspire your peers and foster thoughtful consideration from all audiences.”

C-SPAN also recognized educators Keri Clark at Correia Middle and Robert Clark at Community Montessori, who served as advisers in the StudentCam competition.
