McDonald’s Customers Lament ‘Depressing’ PlayPlace

Not all McDonald's PlayPlaces were created equally in the eyes of fans–especially the older generations.

A photo of one location in Franklin, Tenn., taken by journalist Nancy French last week and shared to X (formerly Twitter) has gone viral after customers were left flabbergasted by its PlayPlace setup.

"This is so heart breaking," French wrote alongside the photo, which depicted two small touchscreens and two chairs in a room separate from the restaurant's main dining area that was decorated with a statement wallpaper that clearly indicated it was the official PlayPlace for kiddos.

In a follow-up tweet, French uploaded a video that showed her discovering some sort of "stomp machine" for kids to entice exercise and a single bench.

I went back in to make sure I didn’t miss something. There was this column thing that might be for getting kids to exercise. But I don’t think this is temporary. I think this is it. pic.twitter.com/NkpTvACJ2J

"This ruined my day," one X user wrote in response.

"Ever see a post that makes you stop dead in your tracks?" another joked.

"Why are we as a society doing this to our children?" a third asked, comparing it to the PlayPlaces with full jungle gyms. "They deserve this."

"Stop this is so depressing," someone else wrote in a Reddit thread.

"This is worse than nothing," another top-liked comment criticized.

"Take me back to better days," a different fan quipped alongside a nostalgia-inducing picture of a hamburger-themed outdoor play arena.

One more simply called it "grim."

A manager at the now-viral location told TODAY.com that both tablets have four games to play, in addition to the stomp machine.

“McDonald’s and our franchisees are proud to provide family-friendly spaces across many of our US restaurants,” a McDonald’s USA representative also told the outlet. “While this restaurant has a few interactive features for younger guests, it does not represent the full PlayPlace design and experience.”

According to French, the controversial redesign came out of necessity after a fire at the building that used to house an "enormous kids area," up until about a year ago.

Hey guys! This was the previous McDonald’s structure that had to be replaced due to fire. The new ‘kids play place’ I posted below is to replace this enormous kids area. ? t.co/PRT6qc1Nvb pic.twitter.com/esxJjGE6Rb

Despite what the company has said, fans are still hoping this is just "temporary" and more updates are on the way.

For those too young to know, this is what it looked like in the 80's and 90's . As a kid, it was so much fun. The McDonalds near me had an indoor playground with giant ball pit! pic.twitter.com/W2hL0JcnLE
