The Genius Cutting Board Trick We Wish We’d Known About Sooner

If you've ever tried to transfer diced potatoes or apples from a cutting board to a bowl, only to have half of them take a detour across the counter (or worse, onto the floor), then welcome to my world. It doesn’t matter how careful I am, at least a few pieces always make a break for it, leaving me scrambling to pick them up before the dog does.

Recently, I stumbled across a game-changing kitchen tip from content creator Lora (@lorafied) on Instagram. Apparently, the handle on my cutting board isn’t just a handy thing for holding or hanging—it has another practical use! Who knew?

You know that long opening in some cutting boards? I always assumed it was just a fancy handle or some sort of aesthetic choice. Turns out, it has a secret identity: a built-in chute! According to Lora, instead of awkwardly sliding your chopped produce off the edge of the board (and onto every surface except the intended bowl), you can guide them neatly through the slot, straight into your container.

This helps corral your food so you don't have to deal with rogue apple cubes rolling away and it prevents unnecessary mess and food waste.

Sadly, though, not all cutting boards have a slot, which feels like a missed opportunity, really. Plus, this could take a bit of practice to get the angle right and if your bowl is too big or too small, the slot trick can turn into a balancing act that takes more time and effort than it should.

While this tip is a game-changer for my kitchen, I figured why stop there? If I'm going to change up how I use my cutting board, let's go all in on cutting board tricks that can make life easier.

More Cutting Board Hacks You Need to Know About

If your cutting board slides around like it’s training for skating in the winter Olympics, place a damp paper towel or kitchen towel underneath it. This simple trick keeps your board firmly in place, preventing potential disasters (like an onion flying off mid-chop).

To help prevent cross-contamination, designate one cutting board for produce and one for cutting raw meat. If you go the plastic cutting board route, you can color code them so you can easily remember which is which (red for meat and green for produce, for example). If you're using two cutting boards that look similar, you can mark one with a little tape or a Sharpie marker so you never mix them up.

Finally, if your wooden cutting board smells like garlic from last night’s dinner, sprinkle it with baking soda, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse. This natural deodorizer helps neutralize strong odors and keeps your board fresh.

So, there you have it! A few simple hacks to make your kitchen life easier. Now, if only there were a trick to keep my kids from sneaking bites of whatever I’m prepping, but I suppose that’s a battle for another day!
