Former NFL, Groveport football star LeVeon Bell accused of sexual assault, victim awarded $25M in civil suit

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Former NFL star and Groveport Madison graduate Le’Veon Bell has been ordered by a Franklin County jury to pay $25 million to a woman who alleges she was sexually abused as a minor for years.

According to court records, Le’Veon Bell and his brother La’Vonte Bell were ordered to pay compensatory and punitive damages in the total amount of over $36,050,000 million to a woman who says the two sexually abused her for approximately 11 years, from 2006 to 2017.

The judgment stems from a civil suit filed in 2022 in which the plaintiff says Le’Veon Bell engaged in ongoing sexual encounters when she was six or seven years old. Le’Veon allegedly continuously engaged in these encounters throughout the girl’s minority age, including during “frequent returns to central Ohio during his college years and beyond,” a complaint states.

The complaint says La’Vonte Bell also engaged in these encounters throughout the child’s minority ages and were frequent through the time she reached an age of consent in 2016.

All of the incidents between the victim and La’Vonte reportedly occurred in Franklin County, while the vast majority of the encounters with Le’Veon occurred in Franklin County, according to the complaint.

Documents state that none of the encounters were consensual and "happened with such frequency as to habitualize the plaintiff to the abuse." The victim alleges "age disparity, physical size, familial relations, access to her home, and grooming were used to force her to engage in these acts without her consent."

The complaint states the victim has suffered extreme and ongoing mental anguish and distress as a result of the sexual relations forced upon her and has affected her interpersonal relationships and day-to-day life.

In March 2024 summonses were issued to both Bell brothers, but neither appeared in Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.

In a statement made to TMZ, Le’Veon Bell’s attorney Thomas Shaffer said, "my client adamantly denies any and all allegations that have been lodged against him. Further, he was never served with a civil complaint or any documents."

In October, a judge issued a default judgment in the woman's favor ruling that the Bells were "served according to law and failed to move, plead, or otherwise appear in this action."

“The default judgment granted was based upon violations of his Fifth Amendment rights of due process for failing to be served,” Shaffer said to TMZ. “My client is in the process of filing a motion to open and reverse the default judgment because the narratives of the case have never been litigated.”

On February 26 a jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff, awarding her compensatory damages in the amount of $20 million, plus $5 million in punitive damages in the claim against Le’Veon Bell. In addition, the jury ruled that La’Vonte Bell pay $11 million in compensatory damages, and $500,000 in punitive damages.

On Le’Veon Bell’s verified Twitch streaming channel, Bell denied the allegations in an online chat Tuesday evening, and said he heard about the case for the first time just two days prior to his online chat.

Bell graduated from Groveport Madison in 2010 and played college football at Michigan State. He became a three-time Pro-Bowl running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

After holding out the entire 2018 season, Bell played for the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers with his last NFL carry coming in 2021. He now is pursuing a professional boxing career.

In 2017, Bell donated $750,000 to his alma mater to fund a new high school football field, which was named Le’Veon Bell Field at Cruiser Stadium.

Neither Le'Veon or La'Vonte Bell have been charged with any crime related to the alleged abuse.
