FBI: Most Wanted Marks 100 Episodes With Harrowing, Heartbreaking Hospital Hostage Situation

FBI: Most Wanted is not going out lightly. The drama just aired its 100th episode only a few days after CBS announced that the show would not be returning for a seventh season alongside fellow FBI spinoff FBI: International.

That decision seems even more backwards after an episode like "100%," which follows several other hard-hitting, incredibly dark episodes that have aired this season, tackling real-life horrors like human trafficking. The 100th installment of the CBS procedural took on the issue of veterans' healthcare, led by Hana (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and her on-again/off-again boyfriend Ethan (Michael Raymond-James) as they visited a VA hospital in an effort to get him clean.

While they were filling out forms, a woman named Dani was growing more and more upset with the man at the reception desk. Carver, her friend and squadron leader, wasn't getting his healthcare fully covered, despite the fact that she and many others had worked to make sure it was 100% covered. The forms were just not in the system, and there was nothing the man could do about it, despite the fact that he was apparently the one who processed the forms in the first place, and he could see that the friend was in a wheelchair.

When he couldn't help, she pulled out a gun and proceeded to take hostages, including Hana and Ethan. Despite her friend's reluctance, Dani said she wouldn't surrender until Carver's coverage became 100%.

Hana hid the fact that she was FBI while the rest of the Most Wanted team gathered outside to work with the hostage negotiators, who were not exactly doing the best job. Barnes (Roxy Sternberg) eventually took over, but Dani wouldn't relent on anything without Carver's coverage being fixed, and even the full force of the FBI wasn't enough to affect the broken system at the VA.

Hana did her best to remain undercover. But a news report gave up the fact that there was an FBI agent among the hostages, and she was eventually forced to reveal herself. That's when things really escalated, and a sniper took a shot, killing Carver but missing Dani. Ethan tried to say he was the actual FBI agent in order to protect Hana and was incredibly close to shooting him in the head, until he talked her down. Dani then turned the gun on herself while Hana took over the talking, but SWAT arrived just in time. Hana and Ethan hugged and said "I love you." And then the episode was over with barely time to take a deep breath.

Not every episode of Most Wanted hits this hard. And the majority of them are much more black and white when it comes to their villains — it is Most Wanted, after all. But the entire FBI franchise has proven its ability to create stories that aren't just about good guys taking down the bad guys, and that are actually creative and entertaining explorations of current events. Dani's methods were extreme, but her feelings were understandable, and you can only imagine what she's already gone through to get to the point of bringing a gun to the VA hospital. That's the kind of thing you do only when you've exhausted every single other option, and it's absolutely wild that even the FBI couldn't simply get her friend healthcare coverage.

When this show is churning out episodes like that, it feels like an extra hard slap in the face to hear that it's been canceled. Hopefully there's still time to give the show the kind of ending it deserves.

FBI: Most Wanted airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on CBS.
