THE GAME: The Angels gave up runs in the first six innings on their way to a 13-6 loss to the Texas Rangers in a Cactus League game on Tuesday in Surprise, Arizona.
PITCHING REPORT: Left-hander José Suarez was charged with six runs (five earned), while recording just two outs. Suarez did not get any outs in the first inning before he was pulled. He returned for the second and still didn’t get out of the inning. Suarez gave up six hits, and all of them had exit velocities over 103 mph, including a Marcus Semien homer. He also walked two hitters. Prior to this outing, Suarez had allowed two earned runs in seven innings this spring. His previous performance gave him a good shot at winning a spot as the long man in the Angels’ bullpen, but this one didn’t help his case. “They jumped all over him,” Manager Ron Washington said. “Everything he put out over the plate, they didn’t miss it. And they hit some hard. They dunk some. It just wasn’t his day today.” … The Angels began testing their relievers in more game-like situations, bringing them in with runners on base and then leaving them in for the subsequent inning. Both right-hander Michael Peterson and left-hander José Quijada were used in that way. Each got out of the jam when first entering and then each gave up at least one run in the subsequent inning. … Right-hander Hans Crouse quickly recorded two outs, but he couldn’t get the third. He gave up a two-run homer and then two straight singles. He was charged with three runs.
HITTING REPORT: Most of the Angels’ regulars had the day off instead of making the hour-long trip across the valley to Surprise. … Nolan Schanuel drove in a run with a 104.1 mph double down the right field line. He hit only two balls harder than that all of last season. Schanuel worked this winter to improve his bat speed and exit velocity. … Mickey Moniak hit a two-run homer, his second of the spring. … Christian Moore reached base three times, with a hit and two walks. Moore is 9 for 32 (.281) this spring.
DEFENSE REPORT: Moore, the second baseman, made an error when a bouncer deflected off his glove and he tried to make a backhand play. The next ball was hit just to his left, and he couldn’t make the play. He also came up short when he leapt to try to catch a pop-up that was hit over his head. … Third baseman J.D. Davis made a nice backhand pickup before starting a double play in the fifth inning.
