The Aztecs enter the Mountain West tournament on a winning note, after SDSU beat Nevada comfortably in the regular season finale Saturday due to a dominant first half.
San Diego State hopes to continue that streak in its first round matchup against Boise State, a team the Aztecs have already beaten twice in the regular season.
The top five ranked teams in the Mountain West received a bye in the conference tournament, and the way the standings shook out left SDSU (No. 4) and Boise State (No. 5) with an already-confirmed matchup in the second round.

According to ESPN’s Men’s Bracketology, SDSU is currently listed as one of the “Last Four In” teams, along with Ohio State, Oklahoma and Xavier. They are currently slotted to be an 11 seed in the tournament according to the projected bracket.
If this projection holds true, SDSU can ill afford to lose against Boise State in its first game of the tournament in Las Vegas. A loss will leave them in a territory where they may have to watch and hold their breath on Selection Sunday to see if the team makes it in the dance.
If the Aztecs were to beat the Broncos, they would then face the winner of San Jose State/Wyoming vs. New Mexico.
Meanwhile, the conference released its post-season honors Tuesday and Magoon Gwath took home two big ones. Coaches and media members who regularly cover the MW named the freshman forward Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. It’s the fourth straight year an Aztec has won the defensive honor and the eighth time overall.
Gwath also earned a spot on the All-Defensive Team – as did Miles Byrd – and honorable mention on the All-Mountain West Team.
Guards Nick Boyd and Byrd were honored with second-team All-MW spots.
Gwath, despite a late-season injury, leads the Aztecs in blocked shots (66) and is second in rebounds (131) and offensive boards (47). Nationally, he ranks No. 7 in blocks per game and No. 17 in blocked shots. Boyd led the team in a number of categories, including regular-season scoring (13.2 ppg), assists (116) and defensive rebounds (100).
Byrd paces the Aztecs in steals (60), 3-point attempts (168), 3-pointers made (52), free-throw percentage (.824) and defensive rebounds (100).
SDSU vs. Boise State tips off at 2:30 p.m. PST Thursday on CBS Sports Network.
