And in a bid to help save some cash, she has said that one household item that can bring back sparkle in minutes.

Lorna said: “Taking good care of your gold jewellery is crucial, especially when you wear it regularly.

“We would always recommend getting your jewellery cleaned professionally once a year, however occasional cleaning at home is essential to maintain its beauty and longevity.

“The safest and simplest way to clean gold jewellery at home is by using a mild solution of warm water and baby shampoo.

“Just mix a few drops of baby shampoo with warm water, soak your jewellery for about 10 minutes, and then gently scrub it with a soft-bristled brush.

“After scrubbing, make sure to rinse thoroughly under warm running water to remove any soap residue, and dry the pieces with a soft cloth.”

However, she warns that if you have white gold jewellery then you need to be extra careful not to damage it.

She explained: “Exercise caution when cleaning white gold.

“Choose a gentle cleanser specifically formulated for the material, as you want to avoid wearing down the plating.

“Avoid using abrasive materials like baking soda, toothpaste, or rough brushes, as these can scratch the surface of your jewellery and dull its shine.

“For more stubborn tarnishes or if your jewellery needs a deep clean, it’s best to take it to a professional jeweller.

“They have the expertise and tools needed to clean and polish your gold safely and effectively.”

Laura also told how you need to be careful not to clean your jewellery too much or too often, as this can create a whole other set of problems.

She said: “Although it might be tempting to polish your jewellery frequently to keep it shining, over-polishing can wear down the gold over time.

“To protect your pieces, limit polishing to once or twice a year, and always use a non-abrasive polishing cloth specifically designed for gold.

“Two-tone cloths, like the Connoisseurs Ultrasoft Gold Jewellery Polishing Cloth (£11.49), are a good option.

“The lighter side of the cloth cleans your jewellery and removes tarnish, whilst the darker side gives a polished finish.”
