Pierce Brosnan may have hung up his laser wristwatch, underwater rebreather, and X-ray sunglasses since parting ways with the James Bond franchise, but he still has a few thoughts on the future of the spy films.
The actor, who played the iconic character in four movies between 1995 and 2002, spoke candidly on the topic in a recent interview, from its major change in creative control to who should be the next Bond.

Speaking with The Telegraph in an interview published March 9, Brosnan touched on the franchise’s acquisition by Amazon. He “lamented” the takeover, but praised long-standing producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson for handing over creative control to the brand.
“It takes great courage for them to let go,” he said, calling it the “right decision.” Broccoli and Wilson will remain co-owners under the deal with Amazon. The half-siblings inherited the James Bond franchise in 1995 from their producer father, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli.
Brosnan said he hopes Amazon “handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect,” and then dropped a bombshell opinion on the character’s casting.
Though Brosnan, who was born in Ireland, portrayed the British spy, as did Australian actor George Lazenby, the Mamma Mia! star wants the role to go to a British actor, calling it a “given.”
This comes on the heels of Timothy Dalton, who played Bond in two movies between 1987 and 1989, telling The Telegraph in February that the acquisition “is sad.”
“I have no idea what Amazon would do with it, and I have no idea what the relationship of Amazon to the Broccolis will be. But it is a damn fine series of movies. I was watching it when I was young, we all were. It’s been part of our lives, so anything that threatens it is kind of sad,” Dalton said, suggesting that the acquisition by an American company could make the franchise lose its Britishness.
“It is one of the few wonderful stories we’ve got in film that is British. The leading character is British. We can call it our own,” he said, emphatically sharing that he feels the next actor to play Bond should be a Brit. “Because that’s where it was born, that’s what the stories are. Definitely. One hundred percent,” the 1923 star told the outlet.
No actor has been named Daniel Craig’s successor to the role yet, nor has the next film in the series been announced.
