Parts of the UK are forecast to be warmer than the Costa del Sol and the Amalfi Coast this weekend, as early spring sunshine makes a brief appearance before a sharp drop in temperatures ensues next week.
A high of 19°C is expected across north Wales and northwest England on Saturday, with temperatures set to exceed 17°C for much of the country.
Conditions should remain dry for most despite rain and wind in the north and some patchy showers in the southwest.
Met Office spokesman Honor Criswick said there will be “plenty of blue skies to go around” with temperatures “widely above average for the time of year”.
The north of England will see “the best of the sunshine” on Saturday, she added, before “a mix of cloud and some clearer spells” push temperatures to a low of around 4-6°C overnight.
The sunshine will continue on Sunday for many – far exceeding March’s average maximum temperature of 9.2°C – despite the far north of Scotland facing persistent rain.
Central parts of the UK should see temperatures of 18-19°C, with the possibility of a balmy 20°C in some isolated spots.

Northern Ireland will see potential highs of 15°C on Saturday and 16°C on Sunday.
The early spring sunshine means temperatures are likely to surpass European holiday destinations known for their warm weather. A high of 15°C is forecast this weekend for Marbella on the south coast of Spain, a maximum of 17°C is expected in Ibiza, and 18°C is forecast for Sorrento on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

A spell of rain will move south across the country on Monday, the Met Office said, bringing wintry showers in the north.
By Tuesday, temperatures are set to drop below the March across the UK. Rural spots in Scotland could see -4°C on Tuesday night.

An extra jumper, a pair of thick socks, a pair of long johns or a base layer beneath your clothes can help keep you warm during the colder days.
Wearing layers is often better than putting on one big thick item, according to the British Heart Foundation, which also recommends sticking to wool, cotton or fleece fabrics.
Keep moving
By keeping active you can burn more energy in your body, which creates heat and helps to keep you warm.
Even though it feels warm under your covers, a short jog around the block – if you are able to – could heat you up more than sitting still. Even light exercise can help you keep warm.
“A frontal zone will move south across the UK during Sunday night and Monday with much colder air following from the north,” Chris Bulmer, the Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, explained.
“With these cold northeasterly winds, we are likely to see some wintry showers across the north and the east of the UK next week, but any accumulations of snow are likely to be largely restricted to hills. We’ll also see a return to overnight frosts in many areas.

The Met Office forecaster warned: “While there is uncertainty in the extent of rain and wintry showers through the middle of next week, there is higher confidence that below average temperatures will continue through the week, bringing a very different feel to the mild weather over the weekend. “
It comes after the UK saw its hottest day of the year so far with a peak of 19°C in Santon Downham in Suffolk on Thursday.
Many parts of the South East of the country, including Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and London, also saw temperatures above 18°C this week.
