Starbucks CEO sends message to staff and warns ‘be more effective’ after backlash over wait times, layoffs

STARBUCKS CEO sent a message to his employees warning them to “be more effective” after the coffee giant received backlash over wait times.

Brian Niccol, the new leader of the company, urged his employees to be more accountable and take ownership of decisions amid mass layoffs.

The CEO said in an internal memo: “We’re not effective on how things get to the store, and we’re not effective in making decisions and then holding each other accountable to those decisions.

“This is why we had to make the changes that we had to make.

“We gotta untangle a few things right now. But you know what? It’s all things that we can untangle.”

Starbucks has been working to simplify operations and increase sales, including firing some 1,100 support staff roles and closing hundreds of other unfilled positions.

The company received severe backlash after wait times for coffees blew out to over 40 minutes.

New CEO Brian Niccol joined the chain in September after aiding Chipotle’s exponential growth and transformation.

When Niccol stepped into his role, he vowed to reinstate the chain’s welcoming coffeehouse charm that made the brand what it is today.

“Our stores have always been more than a place to get a drink. They’ve been a gathering space, a community center where conversations are sparked, friendships form, and everyone is greeted by a welcoming barista,” he shared in an open letter.

“Many of our customers still experience this magic every day, but in some places – especially in the US – we aren’t always delivering,” he continued.

Niccol blamed factors such as the “overwhelming” and “overly complex” menu at Starbucks, which features hundreds of items.

The company is in the process of rolling out major changes as part of its “Back to Starbucks” initiative, including a 30% cut to the menu.

Although the significant menu reduction has caused quite a stir among fans, the coffee chain shared it has good reason for the cuts.

As part of Starbucks‘ goal to bring the chain back to its roots, the coffee giant plans to reduce its menu by “roughly 30% in both beverages and food“.

Although the exact menu items being cut have yet to be announced, the news sparked fear among fans that their favorite beverages would be axed.

However, a Starbucks spokesperson told The U.S. Sun that the changes would be positive for coffee fanatics.

“We’ve been focused on simplifying our menu to position partners for success, improve consistency, drive customer satisfaction and enhance our economics,” said the spokesperson.

By reducing its menu, Starbucks will be able to focus on ensuring that the products customers “value most” are available and of high quality, according to the spokesperson.

Customers will also see new and exciting menu options thanks to the cuts, which will position Starbucks to serve “better” menu offerings and “lead the market with breakthrough beverage and food innovation.”

The company will also rely on its baristas for inspiration, as it did last year with its lineup of lavender beverages last spring.

    SIX BIG CHANGES

Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” plan includes several initiatives, such as the expectation for baristas to handwrite patrons’ names on to-go cups.

The hand scribbled names and messages, set to replace the printed labels, are intended to bring a personalized touch to Starbucks.

Another of Niccol’s goals is to bring back the chain’s “for here” rule.

Beginning January 27, customers who order a drink “for here” will be served in a coffee mug, glass, or clean personal cup brought from home.

Both of these were common practice before Starbucks became a rather hectic retailer that emphasized mobile orders and automation.

Another of the new policies is free refills for the “for here” beverages.

During customers’ visits, they can sit and enjoy free refills of hot and iced brewed coffee and tea for their in-store drinks.

Another highly anticipated change was the return of the self-serve condiment bar, including creamer, milk, and a variety of sweeteners.

The Starbucks CEO has also rolled out a new code of conduct, requiring fans to make a purchase to use the restrooms and hang out in the cafes and patios.

This comes seven years after the chain instituted its open-door rule.

The policy reversal is intended to reduce crowds, freeing up tables for paying customers seeking a calm environment and a bathroom not constantly occupied.
