Avalanche keeps dealing, swaps Casey Mittelstadt for Charlie Coyle

The Colorado Avalanche has been the busiest team in the NHL this season, and that didn’t stop on trade deadline day.

Colorado traded Casey Mittelstadt to the Boston Bruins in a deal for Charlie Coyle, The Athletic first reported Friday. The Avalanche also reportedly included a 2025 second-round pick and prospect William Zellers in the trade, while getting a 2026 fifth-round pick back.

Coyle, who turned 33 earlier this week, has 15 goals and 22 points in 64 games for the Bruins this season. He has one more season left on his contract with a cap hit of $5.25 million.

He has played center and wing for the Bruins. Coyle had a career year last season, finishing with 25 goals and 60 points.

Mittelstadt, acquired by the Avs one year and one day ago, started this season off great but has been stuck in a monthslong slump. He has 11 goals and 34 points in 63 games. He signed a three-year contract with a cap hit of $5.75 million in the offseason.

Coyle could slot in on the wing next to Drury and Ross Colton on a re-made third line. If Coyle does play center for the Avs, Colorado will have added three new guys at the position behind Nathan MacKinnon in the past six weeks.

The Avs added Jack Drury from the Hurricanes in the trade for Mikko Rantanen, Brock Nelson in a deal Thursday night from the Islanders, and now Coyle.

Zellers was a third-round pick by the Avs at the 2024 NHL draft. He’s been a dominant player in the USHL this season, racking up 37 goals and 58 points in 40 games for the Green Bay Gamblers.
