I typically keep myself on the 2-year rotation for iPhones so I was stuck with needing a Lightning cable to charge my phone until I upgraded to an iPhone 16 Pro. User Experience
The Crown Joule cable came in a simple Smartish-branded plastic bag with a zippered closure. It was tied up with two twist-ties and had a short user guide with it that included some FAQs. The user guide indicates that the USB-C output plug provides up to 100W of charging power while the Lightning plug provides up to 27W. Typically, Lightning cables can provide up to 12W of power with a USB-A input plug and up to 20W with a USB-C input plug. With this in mind, I’m not entirely sure how Smartish was able to squeeze out a maximum of 27W for the Lightning plug on the Crown Joule.
There is a sticker on the cable that indicates that only one device can be charged at a time. Since this was one of the first thoughts I had, I’m glad this tiny piece of information was included right on the cable. The Crown Joule does connect with data as well as charge devices at USB 2.0 speeds. To verify this, I connected my iPhone 16 Pro to my MacBook Pro and found that it synced quite easily.
To test the charging function, I plugged my AirPods Pro into the Lightning plug and the other end into a power adapter. At the beginning of the charging session, the AirPods were fully charged but the case was at 69%. I let it charge for 28 minutes and it gained 23%. This made the charging rate approximately 0.82% per minute, which is pretty strong. The power adapter I was using had a display on it that let me know the AirPods were charging with a wattage of 1W.
I love that this cable is braided and tangle-free. It makes it that much easier to travel with. It comes in four different color options — No 2 Pencil Gray, Lightly Toasted Beige, Teal Me More, and I’m Blushing.
Conclusion
Over the past year, juggling between Lightning and USB-C devices has been frustrating, but the Smartish Crown Joule has simplified my daily carry. With its durable braided design, fast charging compatibility, and clever 2-in-1 connectors, this cable has earned a permanent spot in my bag. While it’s not without its quirks—like only charging one device at a time and offering modest data transfer speeds—it solves a very real problem for anyone still living in the middle of the Lightning-to-USB-C transition.
