Greg McElroy shared some thoughts on SEC defenses in 2025 on the latest episode of the Always College Football podcast.
McElroy was asked for his prediction on who have the league’s best defense next fall. He stopped short of giving a concrete answer, but he broke down several teams who could compete for that distinction in 2025.
Perhaps most notably, McElroy said Texas has the “highest upside” defensively in 2025 despite losing Jahdae Barron and a few other key players on that side of the ball. The Longhorns were statistically the SEC’s best defense in 2024 as they held opponents to just 4.4 yards per play.
“They bring back some really high-level players,” McElroy said of Texas. “Probably the most star-studded defense in the SEC next year … This is a really good defense when it comes to household names. But there’s also a bunch of pieces that they lost.
“So I think Texas might have the highest ceiling but there’s also some unknowns.”
McElroy also acknowledged Texas A&M, Tennessee, Ole Miss and South Carolina for a variety of reasons before arriving at Alabama as a strong possibility.
“They lost 2 really high-level contributors off of last year’s defense,” McElroy said of the Crimson Tide. “Pretty much everybody else is back. The biggest question with Alabama is how deep are they?
“All that being said, it will be very interesting to see how Alabama does because I like the coaching continuity, I like the personnel additions they made defensively. And I like that a lot of their best players last year were freshmen and sophomores … I expect a pretty big bump. So Alabama is the wildcard when it comes to the best defense in the SEC next year.”
Most SEC programs are just beginning spring ball this week, so there’s still a long way to go before teams suit up this fall.
