Man Utd vs Arsenal Prediction

We look ahead to Sunday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford with our Man Utd vs Arsenal prediction and preview. Will Mikel Arteta mark his 200th top-flight game in charge of the Gunners with a victory?

Manchester United vs Arsenal Stats: The Key Insights

Arsenal have a 51% win probability, according to the Opta supercomputer. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will take charge of his 200th Premier League game. Manchester United have lost their last four Premier League games against Arsenal.

In the days of Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger, Manchester United vs Arsenal was the great Premier League rivalry. Who can forget Roy Keane clashing with Patrick Vieira in the tunnel at Highbury, or Martin Keown getting right in the face of Ruud van Nistelrooy?

But in recent years, there has been a big gulf between the teams that used to so often go toe-to-toe for trophies.

While Mikel Arteta has had Arsenal competing right at the top – albeit the Gunners head into the weekend 13 points behind leaders Liverpool – United have largely scraped around for Champions League qualification. That being said, the Red Devils have two trophies in the previous two years; the Gunners have none.

But what Arsenal have had since Arteta took charge in December 2019 is the kind of stability United crave.

In that time, United have had three permanent managers: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Erik ten Hag and now Ruben Amorim. Ralf Rangnick, of course, had a half-season-long interim spell in charge in 2021-22 as well.

Fittingly highlighting the clubs’ contrasting situations, Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford will mark a major milestone for Arteta, as he takes charge of his 200th Premier League match.

Arteta will become the 14th manager to oversee 200 Premier League games in charge of one club, and the 39th overall to reach the milestone.

At 42 years and 348 days old, he will be the second-youngest manager to hit the landmark after Roberto Martínez (41 years, 111 days). Arteta will also be the fourth Spanish manager to reach 200 Premier League games (after Martínez 265, Pep Guardiola 331 and Rafael Benítez 359).

Arteta has won 118 of his first 199 games, already the fifth-most victories of any manager in their first 200 in the competition (Guardiola 146, José Mourinho 137, Jürgen Klopp 127 and Alex Ferguson 122).

Sure, Arsenal have yet to end their long wait for a league title, but they came agonisingly close in 2023-24, and led the way for much of 2022-23, only to be outdone by Guardiola’s Manchester City juggernaut.

Arteta has the best win percentage (59%) of any Arsenal manager in the Premier League. He also has the joint-best points per game (1.96) with Wenger. His team have averaged 1.89 goals per game in the league; Wenger’s Arsenal averaged 1.88 goals per game.

And he has a fine record against United. He has won seven of his 10 Premier League games against the Red Devils (D1 L2), with his first ever victory for the Gunners coming against them (2-0 in January 2020).

Of all managers to face United at least five times in the competition, Arteta has the highest win rate (70%).

Arsenal have had an untimely wobble in the league, though. A defeat to West Ham followed by a draw with Nottingham Forest has left them well off the pace in the title race, as the Gunners’ injury crisis hits home.

In fact, Arsenal have failed to score in their last two Premier League games, amassing just three shots on target across these games. The Gunners last failed to score in three consecutive league games in August 2021, while they last did so while in the top two of the table for each match in November 2000.

Yet Arsenal hit back in emphatic fashion in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, thrashing PSV 7-1 in Eindhoven to put themselves, surely, into the quarter-finals.

United, on the other hand, might have returned to winning ways in the Premier League by overcoming Ipswich Town 3-2, but they then went down to Fulham on penalties in the FA Cup.

They then could only draw 1-1 away to Real Sociedad in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday despite their hosts offering little attacking threat. Joshua Zirkzee’s well-worked opener was ultimately cancelled out by Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty after Bruno Fernandes handled in the box.

Still, it wasn’t a terrible result given United’s depleted squad, which was short of nine first-team players. They’ll still be without at least the majority of those, though Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte may be able to return.

Arsenal also continue to be without several first-team regulars such as Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus, though their squad is still in considerably better shape than that of their hosts this weekend.

    Manchester United vs Arsenal Head-to-Head

United have lost their last four Premier League meetings with Arsenal, their longest losing run against the Gunners in their league history.

Arsenal won the corresponding fixture 1-0 last season – they have not won consecutive away league games against Manchester United since February 1979.

Leandro Trossard scored Arsenal’s winner in that match last term. The only Gunners players to score a Premier League goal at Old Trafford in consecutive campaigns are Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2019-20, 2020-21) and Emmanuel Adebayor (2006-07, 2007-08).

Arsenal have scored in each of their last 10 Premier League away games against United (13 goals), having only managed to score in 10 of their first 22 visits to Old Trafford in the competition (11 goals).

But if United do win, then they will claim their 100th victory against Arsenal in all competitions. The Gunners have not lost to any other team on as many occasions as they have United (99), while the Red Devils have only beaten Aston Villa more (106).

    Man Utd vs Arsenal Prediction

Arsenal’s chances of winning the league title may be all but over (indeed, the Opta supercomputer model gives them a probability of just 1.4%), but they are well fancied ahead of this contest at Old Trafford.

Arteta marked his 200th league match in charge with a win in 51% of the supercomputer’s 10,000 data-led simulations.

United, on the other hand, came out on top in just 23%. The chance of a draw is 26%.
