Longtime race caller for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Trevor Denman announced his retirement Thursday after 40 years behind the microphone at the racetrack.

“This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever made,” Denman said in a press release. “But my soul is telling me that now is the time.”

The 72-year-old Denman has called races for over 50 years, and it started in South Africa in 1971 . Since 1984, Denman has called all but one summer season at Del Mar. He is well known for his signature sendoff line “And away they go!”

A successor is already in place, as Larry Collmus, the voice of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup for NBC Sports will take over. The veteran already has experience at Del Mar, as he has called the fall Bing Crosby Season since 2020.
