THE Pittsburgh Steelers have seemingly decided what quarterback they want this offseason.
Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are hitting free agency this year, but the Steelers are only expected to retain one of them.
According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, the Steelers are “determined” to sign a quarterback this week.
Between the two of their pending free agents, Schefter says Fields is “first in the packing order.”
Fields and Wilson were both productive in the time they spent as starters for the Steelers last season.
The first six games of the season were started by Fields, and he set the tone by going 4-2 as a starter.
He passed for 1,106 yards with five touchdowns and one interceptions in that span.
Fields also showed off his legs, rushing for 231 yards and five touchdowns.
Wilson took over for the rest of the season, going 6-5 as a starter down the stretch.
He passed for 2,482 yards with with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Wilson also rushed for 155 yards with two touchdowns.
The biggest difference between the two quarterbacks is that Fields is just 25 years old, 11 years younger than Wilson.
If the Steelers are confident in him, Fields can start for multiple years and master the team’s offense.
Meanwhile, Wilson probably only has one or two years left in him at 36 years old.
The Steelers could also look externally for their next quarterback.
Names like Sam Darnold and Aaron Rodgers are available to sign when free agency opens.
The Steelers have also been linked to a potential trade for Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks.
