THE cost of groceries is on the rise as general inflation and new tariffs on foreign imports squeeze consumers’ wallets.

With the price of five kitchen essentials predicted to skyrocket in the near future, shoppers are turning to an easy grocery swap to save money.

While inflation has played a major role in rising grocery costs over the past few years, the situation has been exacerbated by the 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports imposed on March 4.

Experts and major retailers have warned that the new levies will likely spike the price of everyday essentials, such as imported food products.

Financial concerns have pushed 75% of consumers to plan changes to the way they shop in the coming months, per a survey by AlixPartners, a financial advisory and consulting firm.

One key way that shoppers plan to save money amid rising costs is by leaning more heavily on store brands, with 46% admitting that they plan to do so in 2025.

Retail expert Dominick Miserandino previously advised shoppers to not overlook store brands.

Private Label Brands

Private label brands offer a lower-quality version of national brand alternatives at a lower price point. Here are a few examples of these brands:

He noted that they are “often just as good” as name brands and frequently contain the same ingredients.

“Switching to store brands is an easy way to lower your grocery bill without compromising on quality,” Miserandino told The U.S. Sun.

Retail expert Mitchell Olsen also encouraged shoppers to consider private labels over name brands to save money.

He pointed out that while store brands were “as old as retailing itself,” they have seen an upward trend in popularity because companies are putting more resources behind them.

“Instead of mimicking a leading national brand, they are creating their own premium store brands that offer shoppers something unique and of relatively high quality,” he told The U.S. Sun.

“Compared to generic private labels, premium store brands provide retailers with greater levels of differentiation, profitability, and shopper loyalty.”

Costco’s Kirkland Signature and Walmart’s flagship brand Great Value are just a few examples of store brands have become increasingly more relevant in recent years.

Beyond ditching name brands for the cheaper store brands, consumers can save money at the grocery store by creating a shopping list and sticking to it, Miserandino shared.

“The key is to avoid getting distracted by impulse buys that can quickly add up,” he said.

The retail expert also noted that shoppers can save big by buying in bulk at warehouse clubs such as Costco and Sam’s Club, stocking up on non-perishables when they are on sale, and taking advantage of digital coupons and store apps.

ON THE RISE

Consumers are looking for ways to stretch their budgets as experts warn that several grocery staples are likely to see higher prices under the tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

For example, consumers should expect to dish out more cash on strawberries, as Mexico ships significant amounts of the fruit to the US.

Our southern neighbor supplied around 85% of the strawberries imported to the US in 2022, according to USDA data.

Another example of fresh produce that may become more costly under Trump’s tariffs is avocados, as Mexico supplies roughly 90% of the avocados eaten by Americans.

Rising Grocery Costs

The cost of many grocery essentials could increase under the new 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. Here are a few examples:

Fresh tomatoes are also likely to be more expensive at the grocery store, alongside tomato-based products such as salsa, pasta sauce, and ketchup.

The new tariffs on foreign goods could also make popular alcoholic beverages like beer and tequila pricier, as many come from Mexico.

And while consumers are already spending a pretty penny on beef due to environmental and economic factors, the grocery staple could become more expensive under the levies, as Canada is one of the top beef suppliers to the country.

As higher grocery prices loom, several major retailers have voiced their concerns about potential price spikes.

For example, the Walmart CEO signaled fear over price hikes in “uncertain times.”

The Target CEO also shared a ten-word message to shoppers as a warning about prices, sparking concerns over grocery options.
