A HARDCORE left-winger looks set to lead a major teaching union — sparking fears pupils will pay the price of more walkouts.
Matt Wrack, 62, would be the first NASUWT chief with no education background.
His 20-year run as boss of the Fire Brigades Union ended in election defeat this year and after the longest period of strike action in its history.
Mr Wrack, endorsed as the preferred candidate by the NASUWT executive, said then: “I leave with my head held high.
“Since 16 I have been an active anti-racist, anti-fascist.
“My views and values have not changed and I will continue that fight.”
NASUWT is the second biggest teaching union after the National Education Union, run by left-winger Daniel Kebede.
Ex-Tory minister and teacher Jonathan Gullis told The Sun: “I’m dismayed and depressed at the prospect of another teaching union being taken over by the loony left.
“This will spell disaster for the reputation of teachers and undo the previous progress in creating a world-class education.
“Pupils cannot be put through more disruption.”
