THE Denver Broncos revealed a massive decision on the status of a coach following an incident at an airport.
Broncos assistant coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested last week at Denver International Airport after an incident with a cop.
On Wednesday, the Broncos announced the termination of linebackers coach Wilhoite’s contract due to his recently accused actions.
“After thorough discussions as an organization, I met with Michael Wilhoite and informed him we have decided to part ways,” head coach Sean Payton said in a statement.
“We recognize the serious nature of the allegations against him and believe this is the best course of action at this time.
“I appreciate Michael’s contributions to the Broncos and confident he will move forward in a positive direction.”
It was reported by the Denver Post that court records revealed that Wilhoite is facing one charge of felony assault over the incident at the Denver airport.
Wilhoite allegedly left his car unattended in the airport’s drop-off lane and was told by a police officer he couldn’t leave his vehicle in that spot, per police records.
Then, Wilhoite told the cop to “shut the f*** up” twice before he chest-bumped him.
The officer shoved Wilhoite, who then punched the officer, per documents obtained by the Denver Post.
The report added that the cop was left with “visible injuries” on his knees and pain in his jaw.
After he was tased by the officer, Wilhoite drove off before he was eventually arrested.
Wilhoite’s bond is set for 5,000, and his attorney expects the 38-year-old to be out of jail next week.
He was also formally charged with obstruction of a peace officer and criminal mischief.
Wilhoite joined the Broncos as an outside linebackers coach in 2023.
He was also on Payton’s staff with the New Orleans Saints in 2019 and 2020.
Wilhoite played six seasons in the NFL after entering the league in 2011 as an undrafted free agent.
He was part of the San Francisco 49ers’ special teams during their Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens in 2012.
Wilhoite played five seasons with San Francisco before he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in his final campaign in 2017.
During his playing career, Wilhoite recorded 298 total tackles, four interceptions, and one fumble recovery in 79 appearances.
Before his two coaching jobs with New Orleans and Denver, Wilhoite was hired as the linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Chargers.
