Harvey Elliott scored a dramatic late winner as Liverpool beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 away from home in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie despite the Reds being outplayed from start to finish.
PSG were utterly dominant at the Parc des Princes, with Alisson continuously forced to come to their rescue.
The Brazilian goalkeeper ended up making nine saves, the most he’s ever made in a match for Liverpool, while the Reds faced 27 shots; they last faced that many (excluding extra-time) away to Real Madrid in November 2014.
And when it looked as though Liverpool might sneak a fortuitous draw ahead of next week’s second leg at Anfield, they went one better – Elliott finishing off a stunning breakaway.
Liverpool may have gone into the tie as favourites – to progress and to win the whole thing – but PSG made them suffer like no one else has this term in the first half.
The Parisians peppered the Reds’ goal, recording 12 shots in all before half-time, three more than any other team before half-time in 2024-25 – and that doesn’t include their disallowed goal.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia curled a gorgeous left-footed finish into the top-left corner from the right side of the box in the 20th minute, but the Georgian strayed marginally offside, leading to the goal being chalked off.
Nevertheless, PSG still posed considerable threat. Three attempts came in quick succession with half an hour played as Ousmane Dembélé was denied by Alisson, then Bardley Barcola saw the follow-up kept out by Dominik Szoboszlai before also blazing over.
It was only the second time on record (since 2003-04) that Liverpool faced 12+ shots in the first half of a Champions League match but didn’t concede.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Kvaratskhelia tested Alisson with a free-kick and then again after cutting in from the right and shooting through a crowd.
Liverpool offered nothing as an attacking force, with even Mohamed Salah ultimately taken off after being ineffective.
But as it happened, Salah’s replacement – Elliott – found the bottom-left corner just 46 seconds after coming on, sparking scenes of bedlam among Reds players and bemusement everywhere else in the stadium.
