SPRING is almost here and soon it’ll be time to drag out your garden furniture.
A simple trick can help leave your wooden chairs and tables shining in minutes.
If you’ve dusted off the cobwebs but noticed your outdoor furniture looks a little worse for wear, a kitchen staple can help transform it.
You can use this budget-friendly item to wipe down the cracked dry surface.
Within minutes, it will leave the surface of your set looking as good as the day you bought it.
And this secret weapon is olive oil.
It doesn’t matter if it’s extra virgin or flavoured, though maybe steer clear of this so you don’t smell like your dinner after a day in the sun.
Shoppers can pick up a litre bottle of olive oil for just £5.20 from Asda, breaking down to about 50p per 100 mililitres.
And that’s all you’ll need for this handy hack.
Andy Ellis, who works as a furniture expert at garden furniture retailer Posh.co.uk spoke to Woman and Home about the tip.
“Rattan furniture can be tough to clean, but using just a small amount of olive oil to clean and buff it can make it look as good as new,” he explained.
“Rub the olive oil on a soft cloth and buff it into the furniture to add shine and reduce cracking.”
It will only take five minutes to complete the task and you will notice immediate results.
The step allows the oil to act as a natural polish, helping to moisturise and lightly shine the wood.
This works particularly well on unfinished or lightly finished pieces of furniture.
However, experts recommend against using too much olive oil when polishing.
It can leave a greasy residue, which will attract dust as well as dirt and potentially insects outdoors.
Top 5 Spring Gardening Jobs
Nick Grey, Gtech Inventor and CEO shared the tasks to crack on with as Spring arrives.
1. Clean your garden
Make sure to clear away all leaves, soil and plant debris from your patios and flower beds; this creates a healthier environment for new growth, especially as we get into the summer months. Gtech’s Garden Safety Kit includes durable gardening gloves and safety glasses; perfect for comfortability whilst tackling those outdoor tasks.
2. Weeding
Early Spring is the best time to tackle weeds; if you can introduce some regular weeding into your routine, you can guarantee a tidy garden all year round.
3. Hedge maintenance
Spring is the ideal time to tidy up overgrown hedges and shrubs, as regular trimming ensures healthy growth and reduces pest issues. Using a tool like the Gtech Lightweight Hedge Trimmer can help to keep your greenery looking sharp and neat.
4. Composting
Starting a compost heap this spring is a pro-active, cost-effective way to harness nutritious soil for your plants and recycle organic waste that will benefit the overall health of your greenery and foliage.
5. Look after your lawn
Lawn care is hugely important in assuring your garden stays looking beautiful. Make sure to rake away any excess leaves and trim your grass routinely.
Professionals also suggest testing the hack on an inconspicuous area first.
This is to make sure your furniture isn’t heavily coated with varnish or paint where olive oil won’t effectively penetrate.
And even if your outdoor furniture set isn’t wooden, Andy still advises giving it a wipe down before use.
“Unfortunately garden furniture can accumulate a lot of grime and dirt after being kept in cold and damp conditions over the winter period,” he said.
“So it will need a cleaning to get it sparkling again.”
