WestJet aligns carry-on size with industry standards

In a strategic move to align with industry standards, WestJet Airlines has announced an adjustment to its carry-on baggage size, effective May 6, 2025. The new dimensions will be set at 22" x 14" x 9", including wheels and handles, which mirrors the commonly accepted specifications among North American airlines . This change marks a notable shift from WestJet's previous guidelines by increasing the height allowance while slightly reducing the width. Such modifications are anticipated to enhance overhead bin space utilization and facilitate a more efficient boarding process for passengers.

The Calgary-based airline announced on Monday that beginning May 6, 2025, the new carry-on bag limit will be 22” x 14” x 9” (including wheels and handles). This replaces the current 21” x 15” x 9” limit, which was unique to WestJet.

“We expect this change will help streamline check-in and boarding times by eliminating the inconsistency between WestJet and several other carriers,” said Colleen Tynan, WestJet’s vice-president of experience management, in a statement.

WestJet said it will begin delivering new baggage sizing devices to all of its airports on March 13, giving travelers time to adjust their luggage if needed. The change also includes all Sunwing aircraft that are set to join the WestJet fleet in the spring.

“We expect this change will help streamline check-in and boarding times by eliminating the inconsistency between WestJet and several other carriers,” said Colleen Tynan, vice president of experience management. “Introducing a new standard size ensures more bags fit on more flights, so we expect this to have a big impact on the overall experience on board.”

The decision to standardize carry-on sizes is particularly significant in today’s travel landscape, where efficient use of cabin space can greatly affect passenger experience. By adopting dimensions that are consistent with those of other carriers such as Sunwing and Delta Airlines, WestJet aims not only to streamline check-in procedures but also to mitigate delays during boarding . This alignment with industry norms reflects a growing trend among airlines prioritizing customer satisfaction through operational efficiency.

Additionally, this initiative underscores the importance of clear communication regarding baggage policies. To aid in this transition, WestJet plans to introduce new baggage sizing devices at airports starting March 13th, providing travelers with ample time to adjust before the official implementation date . Overall, WestJet's alignment of carry-on size with industry standards represents a proactive approach in enhancing customer service while ensuring compliance with broader aviation practices.
