The Danish island’s residents could reach “new heights” with American support, the president has claimed
US President Donald Trump has reiterated his ambition to take control of Denmark’s autonomous territory of Greenland, highlighting the issue during a keynote address on Tuesday.
Copenhagen has previously dismissed the Trump administration’s proposal to purchase the island and has rejected claims of local public support for such a transition.
In a speech to a joint session of the US Congress on Tuesday, Trump asserted that the US needs Greenland for both national and international security, and expressed strong support for the islanders’ right to self-determination.
”I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” Trump declared. He said the US can offer Greenlanders safety and prosperity, promising to elevate life on the island “to heights like you have never thought possible before.”
Strategically located near the Arctic region, Greenland grants NATO member Denmark a claim to its natural resources under international law. The US maintains a military base on the island, a presence dating back to World War II. While the likelihood of the US using force to annex Greenland is deemed low, Trump has not ruled out that possibility.
