The Chicago Cubs are bringing back reliever Yency Almonte on a minor league deal after his missed most of the 2024 season with a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery.
The Cubs are bringing back pitcher Yency Almonte on a minor league deal. He appeared in 17 games for them last year. Has a career 4.44 ERA.
It’s not quite clear where Almonte is in his rehab/ramp-up process, though I expect we’ll find out soon enough. The 30-year-old righty managed just 15.2 innings last year for the Cubs.
Almonte, who came over in the Michael Busch trade, briefly flashed some serious effectiveness before the shoulder gave out (3.45 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 29.9% K). He had intermittently been very good in the big leagues before that, so you wouldn’t rule out a resurgence – the Cubs are signing him for a reason. But you also just never know what a guy is going to be after shoulder surgery, so expectations should be held very much in check.
Consider it a flyer move on a guy the Cubs know reasonably well. If he comes back healthy and effective at some point this year, it’s a bonus that didn’t cost much or present much in the way of risk.
