AN ICONIC grocery store location is closing its doors, and the community is reeling from the news.
The Piggly Wiggly had been in business for more than 50 years.
The store in Columbia, South Carolina is closing for good after half a century of operation.
The location, known locally as the “Social Pig,” will be shuttering after the property owners declined to renew the store’s lease, according to owner Darrell Miller.
In an emotional Facebook post, Miller addressed the community with the announcement that it would be closing.
“Our lease has expired, and being unable to effectuate another that would continue the store as Piggly Wiggly, it is my sad duty to announce that our iconic Pig on Devine- the ‘Social Pig’-is closing,” Miller wrote.
“I submit our sincere thanks to the residents of the surrounding communities and the Greater Columbia area for your steadfast and generous support over the past fifty years. You have blessed us.”
Miller went on to thank the store’s staff and longtime customers, and reflect on his fifty-seven year career in the grocery store business.
“I would not have chosen anywhere else to finish the journey,” Miller wrote.
Miller announced that he would be retiring at the end of the store’s lease.
He also indicated in the post that more information about the store’s closing timeline and process would be announced soon.

The store’s closing announcement received an outpouring of support, as shoppers shared their condolences and memories of the local institution.
“So sad to lose this great place,” one shopper wrote.

“I hate to hear this,” said another.
“The ‘Social Pig’ has been a part of this community for so long. You all will be missed.”

Fans are clamoring to buy up arts and crafts supplies as JoAnn stores have announced plans to close all 800 locations.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in January.
Meanwhile, Hooters and Denny’s, two American fast casual restaurant chains, both announced that they would be shuttering as many as 290 locations this year due to rising costs and inflation.
