On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa agreed on an extension, taking one of the top interior defenders off the board. Less than a week away from the start of the NFL’s free-agency period, extensions and franchise tags are starting to roll in, taking some of the top names off the board and causing teams to shift their focus.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Odighizuwa and the Cowboys agreed to terms on a four-year, $80 million deal, with $58 million guaranteed.
Odighizuwa becomes the latest extension dolled out by Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, which includes new money for quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb since the start of training camp last season.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 4, 2025How does the Osa Odighizuwa extension affect the Chicago Bears and the rest of the league?
The Osa Odighizuwa extension shrinks the interior defensive linemen class for the rest of the league. That might matter for a Chicago Bears team that is looking to improve in the trenches. Odighizuwa was Pro Football Focus‘ top-ranked interior defensive lineman. The Athletic ranked Odighizuwa third among defensive tackles and was the site’s 15th-overall highest-ranked free agent.
While defensive tackle isn’t atop Chicago’s list, it’s a position that’s somewhere behind interior offensive line and edge rusher, and I expect General Manager Ryan Poles and company to spend money there, whether in free agency or the NFL Draft. With Odighizuwa off the board, the price tag for Philadelphia Eagles defensive Milton Williams probably goes up, meaning Chicago would likely shop in the tier three or four end of the pool at that position, which includes names like D.J. Jones, Poona Ford, Levi Onquzurike, and Jarran Reed.

Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-Imagn ImagesOdighizuwa was a third-round selection of the Dallas Cowboys during the 2021 NFL Draft and enjoyed a strong finish to the 2024 season, logging four sacks in the final nine games. Odighizuwa has massive 34-inch arms, played in 78 percent of Dallas’ snaps on defense last season, and is a regular threat to beat double teams on the interior, opening things up for the edge rushers on either side of him. In his previous three seasons in the league, he’s notched 38, 44, and 51 pressures, marking improvements every season.
It’s worth noting that PFF’s free agency tracker projected Odighizuwa to receive a four-year, $85 million deal, which is just $5 million under what he received from Dallas. The $5 million savings the Cowboys received are likely the result of more guaranteed money than projected and a small “homegrown discount.” Nonetheless, PFF’s projections remain among the best in the business regarding contracts.
