After his name was called as the winner of the Best Actor Academy Award at the 2025 awards ceremony, Adrien Brody was walking up to the podium to give his speech when he turned around and threw his gum at partner Georgina Chapman in an act that drew intense backlash from fans.
Soon after the incident, Brody broke his silence on what really led him to do this, recounting his thought process to Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos backstage at the show.

In a video that aired on LIVE with Kelly and Mark on Monday, March 3, Brody sat down with the talk show hosts to break down the moment, explaining that he "forgot" he had gum in his mouth and didn't want it to get in the way of giving his speech.
Consuelos then questioned if he could have swallowed it, saying, "You can't swallow it, right? That's bad for you." In response, Brody pondered the possibility, admitting, "I could've. I didn't think about that. I was just like, 'I've gotta get rid of this somehow.'"
When the incident happened live, fans immediately called out Brody for what he did, saying that it was "disrespectful" and "gross."
But the gum-throwing wasn't the only notable part of Brody's win, as his speech reportedly broke the record to become the longest in Oscars history at almost six minutes, beating a record set by actress Greer Garson in 1943.
Brody took home the award for Best Actor for his performance in the film The Brutalist, winning over Timothée Chalamet, Sebastian Stan, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes.
