Sammy Sosa Opens Up Again About Alleged PED Use: “Nobody Was Blind”

Sammy Sosa hasn’t been back in our Cubs lives for long, formally at least, but his impact isn’t going unnoticed or unappreciated.

At CubsCon, he played to our nostalgia by running onto the stage with a mini American Flag before being named as one of the newest members of the Cubs Hall of Fame. And this spring, he’s been helping out Cubs hitters, including big leaguers like Vidal Brujan, who homered and credited Sosa with the tip that got him there, as well as minor league prospects. The only thing he hasn’t done yet — and I am definitely not saying I personally need him to — is actually admitting without reservation to his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

I’m sure there are those of you who remember that he did apologize for some amorphous career wrongdoings back in December, but I’ll remind you that he didn’t quite admit to using steroids: “I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games. I never broke any laws, but in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.”

Was it close? Sure. And it was evidently enough to pass whatever (not required by most fans) bar the Ricketts Family set for him, because Sosa was finally welcomed back into the fold.

But compare Sosa’s statement to the statement Mark McGwire gave The Associated Press and you’ll see the difference: “It’s time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected. I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize.”

Again, I don’t need Sammy Sosa to go any further than he did – I think we ALL know exactly what happened. And I was vocally against the Cubs forcing him to apologize in the first place. But I’m just saying, strictly speaking, he didn’t really admit it.

Today, however, he did get a little closer.

Sammy Sosa Inches Closer to an Admission

In a steroid-centric interview at USA Today, Sammy Sosa said a bit more on the matter, easing into it as the conversation unfolded.

When the topic of performance-enhancing drugs first came up, Sosa said: “Man, I don’t really want to go that route …. That’s a very delicate route, you know what I mean? But come on, nobody was blind.”

Indeed. Nobody was blind… (I’ll finish the thought for him) … to the fact that Sammy Sosa and many other players were using steroids.

He eventually continued and got even closer to the mark: “I read Mark (McGwire’s interview detailing his use of PEDs),” Sosa says, “and I agree with what he said. There was no testing. There were no rules. We didn’t break any laws.”

    We.

    We didn’t break any ways.

Yeah, we know, man. You can just say it.

If you missed McGwire’s comments, they were once again very straight-forward. He basically lays out that, yes, he took steroids and that he wouldn’t have if there were any rules, regulations, or routine testing. So, Sosa’s “we” comments to USA Today were a pretty clear nod toward the same.

But for some reason, Sosa is still hanging onto the “I never tested positive” line, and I don’t really know why — he’s not fooling anyone but himself with that. I also don’t know how many more times a reporter will feel the urge to speak to him on the matter, maybe perpetually until he lays it out there. Meanwhile, the fans that care might not ever get the precise closure they’re seeking.

Speaking for myself, I don’t need more from Sammy Sosa. I didn’t need the apology, either. Like I’ve said, no one is under the wrong impression of what happened. At the same time, if I were him, I’d have already ripped off the bandaid. I’m sick of talking about this (and we’re not learning anything new with each baby step forward). So in reality, he’s just prolonging a story that could very easily be put to rest.

Until he talks about it again and we kinda have to cover it, the story will be out of sight, out of mind for me. But I know not every fan feels the same way I do.
