Premier League favourites to make it in the top 4 in 2024/25

The top four finishers in the Premier League each year are entered into the Champions League for the following season. England also currently leads UEFA’s coefficients table, and are set to land an additional spot for 2024/25 due to how well the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa are doing in this years’ European competitions.

Here we profile the runners and riders, looking at their strengths and weaknesses as they bid for Champions League qualification.

    Liverpool (1/1000 at bet365)

With the title all but wrapped up following a recent win away at Manchester City, Liverpool’s place in next season’s Champions League will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Arne Slot’s side also finished top of the inaugural League Phase of the Champions League and, with one hand on the Premier League title already, will be able to go “all in” on winning another European trophy this year.

Bet on Liverpool at 1/1000 with bet365

    Arsenal (1/25 at AK Bets)

There was a time when Arsenal’s sole objective at the start of a season was to qualify for the Champions League. Arsène Wenger even went as far as to say a top-four finish was like winning a trophy for his team. No longer. Arsenal have had their sights set on the title after two consecutive near-misses.

The Gunners look set for another runners-up medal, however, with Liverpool widening the gap at the top to 13 points after Mikel Arteta’s side dropped points at home to West Ham and at Nottingham Forest.

They have a healthy cushion to those behind them, however, especially Chelsea and Newcastle who sit in 5th and 6th at the end of March. Plus they’re still in this year’s Champions League, albeit with a likely quarter-final against Real Madrid should they make it past PSV in the last 16.

Bet on Arsenal at 1/25 with AK Bets

    Manchester City (1/3 at BetVictor)

Manchester City became the first team in English football history to win four titles in a row last season. Following a mid-season collapse this time around, however, they will not be making it five.

The goal now is just to make the top four and extend an unbroken streak of Champions League football at the Etihad every season since 2011/12.

Despite losing to both Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, their league form has improved since the start of 2025 and they currently find themselves in 4th place. It would still be a huge shock if they failed to qualify for UEFA’s top competition.

Bet on Manchester City at 1/3 with BetVictor

    Chelsea (5/6 with Sky Bet)

Chelsea have spent more than £1 billion on new players since Todd Boehly and his consortium bought the club in 2022. Yet the Blues have not qualified for the Champions League since Roman Abramovich’s chairmanship. After Mauricio Pochettino’s exit, Enzo Maresca is tasked with getting them back into the top four.

After five straight wins in late November and throughout December, they were whispers of a title challenge, but this was short-lived following a run of five without a win over the festive period and start of January. Their form has been up and down since.

A trip to Newcastle in the final month of the season may prove vital for their top four aspirations.

Bet on Chelsea at 5/6 with Sky Bet

    Nottingham Forest (12/5 with Spreadex)

Since their return to the Premier League in 2022, Forest have been battling to stay in the league – and spending a fortune on countless players to do so.

No one saw this season coming, and European football – whether it be in the Champions League or one of the other two competitions – is looking very likely. The ‘Tricky Trees’ haven’t played in a UEFA competition since 1996.

Head coach Nuno Espírito Santo is now working with a less bloated squad and has been able to put together a settled side. Goalkeeper Matz Sels, and centre backs Murillo and Nikola Milenković – who complement each other’s game perfectly – have been pivotal to a new-found defensive solidity.

At the other end of the pitch, Chris Wood is having the best season of his career, having netted 18 times by the end of February.

Back Forest for a top four finish at 12/5 with Spreadex

    Newcastle United (3/1 at Betfair)

Newcastle United were not really involved in the battle for the top four last time out. They struggled to balance their Champions League commitments with their domestic ones, resulting in a seventh-place finish. Since then the Magpies have been constrained in the transfer market by the Premier League’s financial rules.

With no European football this time around, The Magpies have found life a little easier – also reaching the final of the Carabao Cup. The goalscoring form, and all-round game, of Alexander Isak this season have entered him in the conversation for the league’s best striker.

The Swede is on 19 goals as of the end of February, with a run of 11 in 8 games which helped propel Newcastle up from 12th to 4th. With 11 games to go, they sit in 6th with a little bit of work to do to leapfrog Chelsea, Forest and Man City.

Bet on Newcastle to qualify at 3/1 with Betfair

    Bournemouth (12/1 at Paddy Power)

Andoni Iraola’s stock continues to rise as he has Bournemouth competing for Europe in just their third season since returning to the Premier League, and his second in the Cherries’ dugout.

The Dorset club lost top scorer Dominic Solanke in the summer too, but his goals have been shared between a front three who are all impressing and may also be subject to bids off the back of this season.

Justin Kluivert, son of legendary Dutch striker Patrick, has arguably been the standout with 12 Premier League goals in 22 starts, including a hat trick against his dad’s former side, Newcastle.

Bournemouth will hope to rediscover their excellent home form having lost their last two at the Vitality Stadium, although their away form has been almost identical with half of their wins coming on the road.

Back Bournemouth to secure Champions League football at 12/1 with Paddy Power

Brighton & Hove Albion (12/1 at BetVictor)

Brighton & Hove Albion’s performances dropped off in the second half of last season and it was no surprise when Roberto De Zerbi and the club parted ways. As was the case when De Zerbi, and Graham Potter before him, took charge, 31-year-old Fabian Hürzeler has overseen a seamless transition.

The youngest permanent manager in Premier League history started with back-to-back wins at Everton and at home to Manchester United but The Seagulls struggled to turn draws into wins before Christmas.

A recent run of five wins in seven, however, has the Sussex club dreaming of another European tour, having progressed to the knockout stages of last season’s Europa League.

Bet on Brighton & Hove Albion at 12/1 with BetVictor

Aston Villa (35/1 with AK Bets)

Aston Villa are going well in this season’s Champions League, having secured a top eight finish and automatic qualification for the last 16. They face an uphill battle if they are to feature in the top UEFA competition again next year, however, having won just once in their last seven Premier League games.

There have been impressive draws at Arsenal and at home to Liverpool, as well as a dramatic comeback win against Chelsea but Villa have often struggled with league games coming off the back of their European adventures.

Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi all arrived on loan in January, as well as Donyell Malen on a permanent deal, in a bid to bolster the squad ahead of the run-in.

Back Aston Villa to reach the top 4 again at 35/1 with AK Bets

    Fulham (55/1 with AK Bets)

After two relegations from the Premier League in 2019 and 2021, Fulham have not just stayed up at the third time of asking, they’ve punched above their weight for three straight seasons.

This season looks to be their best top flight campaign since the 00’s, despite losing star midfield anchor João Palhinha in the summer. Among the highlights have been wins at Newcastle and West London neighbours Chelsea, and a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Fulham may only be five points away from Man City at the beginning of March, but it’ll be tough for the Cottagers to climb above so many teams in the next couple of months.

Bet on Fulham for a top 4 berth at 55/1 with AK Bets

My Premier League top 4 betting tips

Here are my betting tips for the Premier League top-four race in the 2024/25 season.

    Top 4 acca – Liverpool (1/1000), Arsenal (1/66), Manchester City (2/7) & Nottingham Forest (2/1)

With Liverpool and Arsenal having all but locked in their place, the only way to add some value here is to back a relative underdog to take one of the other spots.

Nottingham Forest have had a brilliant season and many neutrals will no doubt be rooting for the former two-time European Cup winners to qualify for their first Champions League appearance since the 1992 rebrand. Their clash with Chelsea, at The City Ground, on the final day could be the decider.

After a promising start, the West Londoners have been heading in the wrong direction since a back-to-back defeats to Fulham and Ipswich over Christmas. They’ve taken just two points in their last six Premier League away games at the time of writing, and have also exited the FA Cup.

While Man City have had a disastrous season, by their standards, their form has improved since Christmas. They were no match for Arsenal and Liverpool when they clashed with the current top two in February, but will expect to win most of their remaining games.

A £10 wager on my top 4 acca would earn you £39.19. Use our calculator below to work out the odds for your own acca.

    Top 2 double – Liverpool (1/1000) & Arsenal (1/5)

These two have been in the top two for some time and while Arsenal’s title challenge has faded in recent weeks, they still have a comfortable cushion to those behind, so these two should be finishing in first and second.

Bet on my top 2 double with Paddy Power

    My top 2 double (2/1)

A £10 bet on my top 2 double offers a potential return of £12.01. Our bet calculator will help you work out the odds for your own double.

    Without big 6 – Nottingham Forest (5/4)

The traditional “big six” are regarded as being Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

With Forest currently in third, behind Liverpool and Arsenal, but ahead of Man City and Chelsea, they have a four-point buffer to Newcastle at the top of the make-believe table in which none of the above six clubs exist.

While things can change quickly, that’s a healthy advantage to have at this stage and especially with only one top half side left to play at home after the upcoming clash with Man City.

Bet on Nottingham Forest as the best team outside the traditional big 6 at 5/4 with bet365

Top 4 Teams in the 2023/24 season

The following four teams qualified for the Champions League by finishing in the top four of the Premier League last season.

Man City: 91 points Arsenal: 89 points Liverpool: 82 points Aston Villa: 68 points

Teams with the most top 4 finishes

The top four was not always a target for Premier League clubs, but it has been since the division was given four Champions League qualification berths in 2001/02. Here is a list of the teams that have finished in the top four most often since the league rebranded in 1992.

    Manchester United – 26 Arsenal – 23 Liverpool – 20 Chelsea – 19 Manchester City – 14 Tottenham Hotspur – 7 Newcastle United – 6  Blackburn Rovers – 3 Leeds United – 3  Aston Villa – 3 Leicester City – 1 Nottingham Forest – 1 Norwich City – 1 Everton – 1

FAQ about the 2024/25 Premier League season

Here are four key questions – and four important answers – about the 2024/25 Premier League season.

    1. Which manager is likely to get the sack if they don’t finish top 4?

Of those in the race for the top four, Chelsea under both Todd Boehly and previous owner Roman Abramovich, have been quick to dispense of managers who fail to deliver on the club’s lofty expectations.

Enzo Maresca is Boehly’s fourth manager in four seasons since buying the club and while his win percentage is currently higher than first two appointments Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino, a couple of pundits have recently suggested the Italian may also be axed if Chelsea don’t secure Champions League football for next season.

    2. Does the top 4 guarantee the Champions League?

A top-four finish guarantees Champions League football. Fifth place should also get the job done this season, with England holding a healthy lead in UEFA’s coefficient rankings.

    3. Which player is likeliest to get their team to the top 4?

Rather than hoping his goals will fire them to another title, Man City will be hoping Erling Haaland can find the net enough times between now and the end of the season to continue their streak of top four finishes.

Several players have starred in Forest’s rise this season, including Chris Wood and centre halves Murillo and Nikola Milenković. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak has become one of the most complete strikers, and top goal scorers, in the league and in world football this season.

    4. Which teams are likely to finish at the bottom 3 spots?

The three promoted sides – Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton – are all looking increasingly likely of playing Championship football again next season.

It was the same story last year when Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United all fell short of bridging what is now an enormous gap between the two divisions.
