THE Dallas Cowboys have reportedly been on the lookout for a wide receiver behind star CeeDee Lamb.
There’s a rival star who could be a fit for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as the NFL’s new league year approaches next week.
Over the weekend, the Washington Commanders traded for Pro Bowl wideout Deebo Samuel.
So the Cowboys could make a response move and be a suitor for 2021 triple crown-winning wide receiver Cooper Kupp, according to NFL insider Dan Graziano.
“The Cowboys will be in the market for a No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb,” Graziano wrote Sunday.
“They have some hope that Jonathan Mingo, their trade-deadline acquisition from Carolina, can evolve into that, but obviously it’s too soon to know and they will be in the market to add at that position.”
Behind the four-time Pro Bowler Lamb, the Cowboys have little depth at the position.
The group features Mingo, Jalen Tolbert, Ryan Flournoy, and KaVonte Turpin, among others.
“They could end up being a Cooper Kupp suitor if his price drops far enough,” Graziano said.
“Dallas also will look to add a dynamic player at running back to pair with Rico Dowdle, who finished the season strong for them.”
Graziano also reported that trade talks between the Rams and teams interested in Kupp “are expected to heat up this week.”
Kupp has a $12.5 million base salary for 2025.
Likely, the Rams would not want to pay his salary.
The Commanders will reportedly pay Samuel his entire $17.5 million salary once the trade becomes official on March 12.
The Rams could covet draft picks.
They currently own just six selections and soon-to-be seven as a special compensatory award for losing Raheem Morris to the Atlanta Falcons in the 2025 draft – and none in the second round.
The Cowboys, however, have only six picks in the draft.
But the Commanders reportedly gave up a fifth-round pick to receive Samuel’s services, so a Day 3 pick plus taking on Kupp’s salary might just be enough for teams to work a similar deal.
The Cowboys could use Kupp’s versatile impact on offense.
However, the 31-year-old has battled ankle and hamstring injuries in the last three seasons.
Kupp recorded 67 catches, 710 yards, and six touchdowns for the Rams in 12 games in 2024.
He has still helped the Rams earn playoff berths in consecutive seasons.
