GMKD Talks Goalies, Moving Beyond Bowman, B1G Brackets, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Scott Powers over at The Athletic talked to Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson about the Seth Jones trade. It’s a great piece; that’s why I’m leading off with it this morning. There are so many layers to continue to unpack from this trade — with the trade deadline coming like a freight train on Friday afternoon — and the Blackhawks have games on Monday and Wednesday before it hits (and another Friday night a few hours after it passes).

GMKD admitted his goaltending situation is “definitely a little more complex” than it was waking up on Saturday morning. But he also didn’t rule out finishing the season with what they have and then assessing the future. But, to be clear (again), newly acquired Spencer Knight is the present and the future between the pipes.

“I think we really solidified the future of our goaltending position, gained some more draft capital that we can use on the market,” Davidson told Powers. “We made sure to find a home for Seth that accomplished kind of what he was looking for — that he expressed last week, to go to a contender. It feels like we checked a number of boxes.”

“Overall, the benefits of the deal were such that it was something we felt compelled to do.”Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson explains his perspective on last night’s big trade ⤵️ t.co/4mannS40qP

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) March 2, 2025 Davidson was supposed to be on the Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast this morning but rescheduled because something came up. Hmm… Ben Pope over at the Chicago Sun-Times wrote a good column on how moving on from Jones finally feels like the final move that cleanses the organization of the Stan Bowman Era. I’ll have a thought on that in a moment, but this is a solid ready that I also encourage you to give a click. One thing that made me chuckle a bit: “Oddly enough, even after trading Jones, the Hawks have more players left from the trade (Nolan Allan and prospect Dominic James, both of whom were drafted with Jackets picks) than the Jackets do.”

Trading Seth Jones closes the final door on the Stan Bowman era.Now the Blackhawks are fully Kyle Davidson's team. He has a basically blank salary sheet. And it's time for him to start building his team up.New column: t.co/YyTIdlhWKM

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) March 2, 2025 Regarding “moving on from the Bowman Era” — as you hopefully know if you’ve been coming here for the past three years or reading me for more than a decade before that, I’m a big fan of context. And being historically accurate. That clicks on when I see stuff like “Dale Tallon was 100 percent responsible for the dynasty” and “Bowman didn’t do anything to win three championships.” In this case, we do need to (once again) acknowledge that Bowman did not leave an empty cupboard when he got canned. If we’re going to completely move on from Bowman, then the following holdovers from his administration would also need to go: Connor Murphy, Philipp Kurashev, Alex Vlasic, Lukas Reichel, Drew Commesso, Landon Slaggert, Wyatt Kaiser, Louis Crevier, Allan, Colton Dach and Ethan Del Mastro (and, if he signs this summer, Ilya Safonov). HOWEVER: the point holds that Jones became emblematic of the failures of the end of the Bowman regime and him moving on is, at least mentally (for some, emotionally) a closure moment. I agree with Pope on that point fully. Oh, by the way: there’s a game tonight. The Los Angeles Kings, who have been scouting the Blackhawks all year, are in town tonight. I’m interested to see who is hanging out in the press box tonight to watch these two teams. A little more love for Oliver Moore as one of Minnesota’s repeat gold medal winners at the World Juniors at the Wild game on Sunday afternoon.

    — Minnesota Men’s Hockey (@GopherHockey) March 2, 2025 The Big Ten men’s hockey tournament bracket is set! Minnesota finished in a tie with Michigan State for the regular season crown but end up the No. 2 seed, which means they’ll face Notre Dame in the best-of-3 first round. The first round begins on Friday night.
