Deebo Trade Fallout, The Latest on Myles Garrett, NFL Trade Requests, Justin Fields and the Raiders? And Other Bears Bullets

It’s Day 56 of the Chicago Bears offseason. When given the choice between getting six crossaints for $5 or 12 crossaints for $6, which would you choose?

Someone had to break the dam on offseason player transactions. It’s a shame it wasn’t the Bears. But it makes sense that it was the Commanders, a team looking to take the next step and thinks adding a veteran receiver like Deebo Samuel will help push the team over the hump. I know some Bears fans are miffed that all it took was a fifth-round pick to snag Deebo. And I’ve seen some comments upset that their favorite team never does anything like that, as if I am supposed to forget that Chicago sent a fourth-round pick to Los Angeles less than a calendar year ago to get Keenan Allen from the Chargers. I’m not sure what is more telling: That all it took to trade for Deebo Samuel was a fifth-round pick or tha the trade went down shortly after wide receivers put on a show at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. If I were to take a stab at it, I’d guess that San Fran already has players lined up in free agency and the draft that the front office believes can plug into the Deebo role. Good teams don’t rebuild. They re-load. On the one hand, the Cleveland Browns are clear in that they have no interest in trading star pass-rusher Myles Garrett. But on the other hand, it doesn’t seem like Garrett has any interest in running it back with Cleveland:

#Browns DE Myles Garrett is unwilling to negotiate a contract extension with the organization, as his agents have apparently “slammed the door shut” on any discussions, per @MaryKayCabot. Garrett remains firm—he no longer wants to be in Cleveland. pic.twitter.com/Ij3GdMUJuh

    — Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) February 27, 2025 Keep an eye out on the Philadelphia Eagles as a team that could pursue Myles Garrett via trade. The Super Bowl champs have a “real” interest in swinging a trade for Garrett, reports The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. Ideally, Garrett stays as far away from the NFC North as possible. So an Eagles trade would be fine in that regard. But I would rather see him stick around in the AFC. However, maybe Philly trading for Garrett increases the chances of the Bears signing away an Eagles free agent such as DE Josh Sweat, DT Milton Williams, or RG Mekhi Becton. Spekaing of teams that are on the Bears’ schedule in 2025, the Las Vegas Raiders are pivoting to Plan B in their search for a new QB. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, and Sam Darnold are on Vegas’ watch list. If it’s Fields, then Chicago will play its former starting QB in the stadium in which he picked up his first win.

Should the Raiders sign Darnold, then the Bears will see the 2018 first-round pick suit up for his third different team (they played him twice as a Viking last year and once as a Jet in 2018). And if Vegas lets Russ cook, Chicago will see the Pete Carroll-Russell Wilson tandem for the first time since 2021 when it beat Seattle on the road with Nick Foles as the QB1. (Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images) A pair of notable defensive linemen have been permission to seek trades this offseason: Tennessee Titans defensive end Harold Landry III and Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. Both of these are fine defensive linemen. But if I had to choose one or the other, it would be Landry over Allen. Landry is two years younger and isn’t coming off an injury-shortened season. And while I am unsure of what it would take to acquire Landry, it is worth checking in on the cost of doing business. If you had Los Angeles Rams left tackle Alaric Jackson on your Bears offseason wish list, you can cross his name off of it:

Sources: The #Rams and LT Alaric Jackson have agreed to a 3-year, $57M deal with $35M guaranteed, keeping him in Los Angeles to protect Matthew Stafford.Jackson, who was set to be a top free agent in a few weeks, will now remain with the Rams as they lock in the 26-year-old… pic.twitter.com/OuUQ3Mc3Iw

    — Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) February 28, 2025 If Alaric Jackson (Pro Football Focus’ 18th-highest-graded offensive tackle) is getting a three-year deal worth $57 million that includes $35 million guaranteed, then what could Bears left tackle Braxton Jones (PFF’s 21st-highest-graded offensive tackle) get on a new deal? Probably something in the $18-20 million per year range with $30-35 million in guarantees seems to be the ballpark figure after the Jackson extension. I’m not sure if the Bears can thread the needle, but I love the idea of the team drafting an offensive lineman early, starting their career as a guard, moving them out to left tackle, then drafting that player’s replacement at guard. Moving forward, I hope the Bears go back to valuing positional flexibility and versatility among their linemen because we show how it can muck things up when a player can only suit up at one spot on the offensive line. Lookin’ at you, Nate Davis… Here is how Travis Kelce announced his return to the Chiefs in 2025:

A headline from Pro Football Talk: Jalen Milroe’s hands grew by more than 1/2 inch since the Senior Bowl. Who knew hand size could grow in a month? Somebody has got to let the nasayers know…
