Top Padres Prospects See Limited Action as Spring Training Continues

March is officially underway, which means opening day for the Padres is right around the corner. The team will look to get the sour taste of last season’s postseason exit at the hands of the Dodgers out of their mouth, and they hope that the current roster is enough to get that done.

Not many moves were made in the offseason, and key contributors were lost throughout the winter months. While the results of Spring Training games aren’t the key takeaways from each game, individual performances are one to pay attention too.

Top prospects Leo De Vries (No. 18) and Ethan Salas (No. 33) have both seen time in the Cactus League. De Vries has two hits over 12 at bats thus far while Salas has one hit in seven plate appearances.

Time will tell as to when the two 18-year-old prospects will break through to the big leagues. The two are the only prospects in the top-100 rankings.

Outside of the prospects, newly signed pitcher Nick Pivetta has yet to throw in Spring Training. The right-handed pitcher signed a four-year contract worth $55 million in Feb.

Keeping the entire team healthy is a key for any ballclub, but it will be especially true for San Diego. In 2024 Luis Arraez missed 45 games, Xander Bogaerts missed 51 games and Fernando Tatis Jr missed 60 games.

The team was still able to make it to the postseason, and win a series, but to get to the World Series, health will certainly play a huge factor.
