Another Win for the Cubs, Fifth Starter Talk, Rose Reinstatement, and Other Cubs Bullets

Major news for the Blackhawks, who traded Seth Jones to the Panthers. They’re even getting a first back in the deal, so that’s neat. The rebuild continues.

It was a split-squad day for the Cubs yesterday, and they still won both halves. We discussed the first part here, and then the second part came last night. The Cubs beat up on the Royals 11-1 to stay undefeated on the spring (8-0-3), with each of Pete Crow-Armstrong, Michael Busch, Ben Cowles, and Moises Ballesteros having big games.

    — Steve Sher (@stevesher_7) March 2, 2025 Ben Brown got the start, and allowed just one run. No video or data from this one, so there’s not a lot I can say. Chris Flexen threw the final two innings of the game, and although it seems like a stretch that he could make the team without first spending time at Iowa to wait for an opening, it’s plausible that the Cubs just really want a chance to work with him. Speaking of guys trying to make the rotation, we now know for sure that Javier Assad will start the season on the Injured List as he works his way back from the oblique injury. Craig Counsell says the plan is for Assad to throw a bullpen late this week, after which he’ll likely need another bullpen session, some live BP, and then some game action to build up. That takes you solidly into the regular season. In the meantime, the Cubs have Colin Rea, Jordan Wicks, Ben Brown, Brad Keller, and possibly Chris Flexen vying for that 5th starter spot (though I’m still not convinced that they won’t go with some kind of modified six-man rotation initially). Luke Little will also not be ready for the start of the regular season, though that was known – the Cubs are taking his ramp up slowly after last season’s lat injury. Interesting comment from Tommy Hottovy (Sun-Times) on Little more generally: “What we’ve learned with Luke over the years is that sometimes he might need an extra day of recovery on the front end that some other guys might not need. He’s a big guy [6-8]; he throws hard. It’s a lot of moving parts when you watch him throw, so it definitely is more of that max-effort type of feeling.” On Friday, President Trump proclaimed that he would issue a posthumous pardon for Pete Rose (unclear what a presidential pardon would be for), and then immediately thereafter, this comes out:

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is considering a petition filed by the family of Pete Rose to have him posthumously reinstated from the league’s ineligible list, a league source confirmed.More details ⤵️www.nytimes.com/athletic/616…
