The Weld RE-8 School District in Fort Lupton seeks candidates for a new superintendent for the 2025-26 school year.
Board President Matthew Adame announced on Jan. 10 that longtime superintendent Alan Kaylor planned to retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year after 12 years of service. Kaylor has been on intermittent leave through the Family and Medical Leave Act, bringing in Johan van Nieuwenhuizen as interim assistant superintendent.
“The Board of Education is committed to ensuring stability and continuity in leadership during this time,” Adame wrote in the announcement. “The district administrative team will continue to manage the district’s daily operations effectively, ensuring that the needs of our students, staff, and community remain our top priority.”
The district selected McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, Executive Recruitment and Development to assist with the superintendent selection process. The district has hosted several meetings throughout late January and early February for the community to provide input to McPherson & Jacobson on the desired qualities of the next superintendent. The consultants received input from 43 people at the meetings.
For those who could not make the in-person events, families also had the opportunity to fill out an online survey, which garnered 74 responses.
Results show people want a superintendent who will do what’s best for the students and be mindful of everyone in the district. Sought-after traits include open-mindedness, honesty, transparency, integrity, positivity, top tier communication skills and many more. Many respondents called for a bilingual superintendent or a previous educator or administrator who has experience dealing with underserved communities.

Weld RE-8 officially posted the listing for the superintendent position on Feb. 19 and has to keep the application open for at least 30 days, according to Debra Smith, executive assistant to the superintendent and board of education.
Once the role closes, the board plans to conduct candidate interviews in April, she said. Toward the end of April, the community will also have the chance to meet the finalists for the position before the board reaches its final decision.
