Johansen's death comes just weeks after Hennessey revealed that her father was battling stage 4 cancer and had been diagnosed with a brain tumor.
"As some, but not many of you know, David has been in intensive treatment for stage 4 cancer for most of the past decade," Hennessey wrote in February on a fundraiser website in Johansen's honor as part of the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
"Five years ago at the beginning of the pandemic we discovered that David’s cancer had progressed and he had a brain tumor. There have been complications ever since. He’s never made his diagnosis public, as he and my mother Mara are generally very private people, but we feel compelled to share this now, due to the increasingly severe financial burden our family is facing," Hennessey wrote.
She also noted that Johansen suffered a serious fall back in November 2024, resulting in his back being broken in two places. Consequently, Johansen was hospitalized and underwent surgery, leaving him "bedridden and incapacitated."
Hennessey also said that the trauma from the injury caused her father's illness to progress "exponentially."
Johansen was known for being the lead singer and songwriter for the early punk band New York Dolls in the '70s. He also started his own group, the David Johansen band, before later going on to become a famous solo singer under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter. He would also go to form the group The Harry Smiths.
Johansen's accolades also span further than the music industry, as he appeared in films like Scrooged (1988) and Let It Ride (1989), as well as TV appearances on Cupid and OZ.
Most recently, Johansen also hosted the Sirius XM radio show, "David Johansen's Mansion of Fun."
In addition to his daughter, Johansen is survived by his wife Mara Hennessey.
