Woody Harrelson, known for his acting and activism, is sailing into theaters this weekend in the powerful Last Breath. The movie tells the true story of a deep sea diver who was left without oxygen on the floor of the ocean after a storm disrupted routine maintenance work he was performing.
Harrelson, who has a busy year ahead of him, is executive producing and starring in an upcoming show on Apple TV+ (name yet to be announced). The show is reportedly a comedy and Harrelson is working on it alongside actor Matthew McConaughey, his co-star on HBO’s True Detective (2014).
Harrelson has proven himself a versatile actor, with memorable roles in sitcoms and serious dramas. It’s the reason he’s racked up a net worth in the tens of millions and a reputation as one of the hardest workers in Hollywood.

Woody Harrelson was born on July 23, 1961, in Midland, Texas. His father was a hitman and went to prison when Harrelson was just 7, so he was raised by his mom along with his two brothers in Lebanon, Ohio.
“[I got into acting in] high school,” Harrelson said in a 2009 Interview Magazine piece by Owen Wilson. “I heard that if you were a terrific athlete, you could attract girls. So I had to look into some other possibilities,” he joked.
“I got into theater actually because of this girl, Robin Rogers. After she saw me do an Elvis impersonation in the library, she said I should be in the theater. And I was like, ‘If Robin Rogers wants me to be in theater, I’m going to be in theater.’”
In 1983, Harrelson graduated with a bachelor’s in English and theatrical arts from Hanover College. Afterward, he moved to New York City to start his acting career, booking an understudy gig in the Neil Simon play Biloxi Blues, among other small roles. His big break came in 1985 when he joined the famous ensemble cast of Cheers.

What is Woody Harrelson’s net worth in 2025?
Woody Harrelson has an estimated net worth of $70 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. The actor and playwright became a household name after starring in the sitcom Cheers in the 1980s and ‘90s, which led him to a very successful career in film.
Cheers?
Cheers fans recognize Harrelson as bartender Woody Boyd. He starred in the show from the fourth season on and appeared in roughly 200 episodes. He was cast to replace Nicholas Colasanto, who played “Coach” Ernie Pantusso before dying of a heart attack in 1985.
“At the time [I wanted to do Broadway], I wasn’t thinking to do television,” Harrelson said in a 2020 episode of The Howard Stern Show. The actor had been upgraded from his understudy role in Biloxi Blues and was inclined to stay in New York for it. “But everybody told me, ‘You gotta do this show.’ I’d never seen it. And then I watched one or two episodes and I was like, ‘Yes, this is a great show.’”
While Harrelson’s salary information isn’t public, he is one of the more successful Cheers alums. Only Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer have higher net worths (both at $80 million, per Celebrity Net Worth).

Harrelson played the role of Haymitch Abernathy in 2012’s The Hunger Games, along with the three sequels. The films are based on the bestselling book trilogy by Suzanne Collins, and fell right in that popular dystopian genre of the early 2010s (see: Maze Runner, Divergent, etc.).
With Harrelson’s name and reputation, he certainly made millions from the film franchise—though the total amount hasn’t been officially reported. Screen Rant estimates he made around $5 million for the first film and $10-$15 million per movie by the franchise’s end. With four total movies, we could estimate that his Hunger Games earnings were somewhere between $20 million and $50 million.
True Detective?
Much like his other projects, Harrelson’s salary for True Detective is unknown. He starred in the first season of the hit HBO show alongside Matthew McConaughey. Both actors also served as executive producers.
A 2014 Forbes article compared Harrelson and McConaughey to Claire Danes, who starred in the TV show Homeland around the same time and took home a $110,000-per-episode salary (though she doubled this in later seasons).
If Harrelson earned a similar amount, he would’ve made $880,000 for his eight episodes of True Detective.
Has Woody Harrelson won an Oscar?
Harrelson hasn’t won an Oscar, but he has been nominated three times. The first was in 1997—Best Actor in a Leading Role for The People vs. Larry Flynt. He was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for The Messenger in 2010, and again in the same category for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2018.
Outside of the Academy Awards, Harrelson has an Emmy, two SAG Awards and many other accolades under his belt.
