This is wild, man. Do this in the regular season – win some games, and then tie the rest of the way (you know, somehow) – and a 1.000 winning percentage is pretty strong!
For the third straight game, the Chicago Cubs tied. Down 8-2 in the 7th, the prospects stepped up to score six unanswered and finish the game in an 8-8 tie. That’s just fun. Too bad the game wasn’t televised …
Marquee did share some highlights, though, including Justin Steele’s start:
The box score has Steele going three innings on just 33 pitches, but I wouldn’t necessarily worry about the low pitch count. Three innings was probably the max either way, and if the Cubs wanted him to get more pitches in on the day, sometimes guys go down to the bullpen from there and simulate another inning or two.
Gavin Hollowell finally got into a game, allowing a solo homer, but striking out two. He was at 95-96 mph, and we can tell based on how the Cubs have managed the 40-man since picking him up that they’d very much like to keep him at this point. He has a minor league option year remaining, so he could be an up-down guy this year.
Two clean innings at the end for starting pitching prospect Connor Noland, so that’s fun. He’s down the list on starting pitching depth just by virtue of there being so many more experienced guys ahead of him, but he does have the potential to emerge as a back-of-the-rotation/swing type in the years ahead.
Tyson Miller came out of the gate super wild again today. He was fantastic last year, but he’s out of minor league options, so the Cubs don’t have flexibility with him if he’s not ready to go by the end of Spring Training.
Non-roster invitee Phil Bickford got blown up in his partial inning of work. That doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but when the competition for a bullpen job is as tight as it is right now, that kind of outing certainly isn’t going to help.
Rule 5 pick Gage Workman hit his second homer of the spring, and it was a BLAST:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 28, 2025That was 110.8 mph off the bat. Workman has serious power. And he has an elite glove on the left side of the infield. I really hope the Cubs can find a way to keep this guy and see if last year’s approach changes (he gave up switch-hitting, focused on more contact) really take root. But it’s just so hard to make the jump straight from Double-A to MLB for an entire season, even in a bench role.
Angel Cepeda and Jose Escobar getting into spring games is fun. Lots of youngsters have been. One top prospect I now realize we haven’t seen: Jefferson Rojas. Wonder if he’s not 100%.
