Officially Official: Trey Smith Gets the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag From the Chiefs

Let’s tie a bow on the Trey Smith situation.

There were early reports that had the Kansas City Chiefs as not being expected to place the Franchise Tag on Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith. Considering the team’s salary cap situation and needs at offensive tackle, you could understand how Kansas City would opt to allocate whatever cap space it had to making moves elsewhere along the line. But the Chiefs had a change of heart, ultimately resulting in Thursday’s report that the team *WOULD* give Smith the tag treatment.

And now, that news is officially official:

Trey Smith gets the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag — what does that mean?

Here is a refresher on the Franchise tag:

The Franchise Tag is deployed as a tool to keep players from reaching free agency. It often comes into play when the two sides can’t reach an agreement on a long-term deal. Sometimes, gets handed out to a player when a team is unsure if it wants to retain the player with a multi-year commitment.

And here is your reminder that there are two types of Franchise Tags that teams can use:

The Exclusive Franchise Tag is a tag in which a player can not negotiate a contract with any of the league’s other 31 teams. Hence, the use of the term exclusive in its qualifier. The Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag allows players to negotiate deals with other teams and even sign offer sheets drawn up by another team’s front office. If a player signs an offer sheet while on the non-exclusive tag, the player’s current team can match it. But if the team doesn’t match, then it is eligible to get two first-round draft picks as compensation.

By using the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag, Trey Smith could — in theory — talk to other teams, who could then iron out a trade with the Chiefs. Last year, Kansas City deployed the non-exclusive tag to retain cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. At the time, Sneed was coming off a four-year stretch with the Chiefs in which he collected 10 interceptions in 57 games with the team. He won a pair of Super Bowl rings and then was off to Tennessee after the Titans swung a trade to bring in the Louisiana Tech product.

For what it’s worth, I suppose the Chiefs could do follow the L’Jarius Sneed blueprint with Trey Smith. Kansas City could use the non-exclusive tag as a means to an end that doesn’t result in losing a Pro Bowl player for nothing. Last offseason, The Titans and Chiefs agreed to a trade that sent Sneed to Nashville in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and a swap of 2024 seventh-rounders. I can’t see the Bears doing the equivalent for Smith. And I struggle to see K.C. trading one of its top offensive linemen. But there is a non-zero chance that it could happen. It’s just that I wouldn’t bet on it.
