Two pedestrians in Chapel Hill suffered serious injuries on Friday afternoon after a fire hose fell off a moving fire truck and struck them.
A release from the town police department said according to their preliminary investigation, Chapel Hill Fire Engine 34 was driving toward a crash in town with its lights and sirens on as it traveled southbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and turned left onto eastbound Weaver Dairy Road. As it made the turn, the fire hose fell off and hit the two people, who were walking on a sidewalk.
A spokesperson for the town said both pedestrians were transported to UNC Hospitals and in stable condition despite their injuries. Chapel Hill Police said its officers responded to the incident at the intersection at 3:37 p.m.
As of Friday evening, the Chapel Hill Fire Engine 34 driver is on administrative leave as the fire department’s administration conducts its investigation alongside Chapel Hill Police — which is standard protocol. No additional information is being made public at this time.
