The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce honored retired CEO Jerry Sanders and the city’s new Major League Soccer team Thursday night at the business organization’s 154th anniversary celebration.
That gala event at the Manchester Grand Hyatt downtown drew nearly 1,000 attendees from the city’s business, political and nonprofit communities.
Sanders, who was previously police chief and then mayor, received the the Herb Klein Spirit of San Diego Award, named for the late advisor to President Richard Nixon and editor-in-chief of the Copley Press.
“My last 12 years being with the chamber has been the culmination of an unbelievable career,” said Sanders, who thanked the chamber team and his family for their support.
“I want to thank all of you who have supported the chamber,” he told the crowd of business leaders, promising “the best is yet to come.”
The Moving San Diego Forward Award was presented to San Diego FC.
“Moving San Diego forward is a very good name for this award because that has always been our objective from the very beginning,” said Sir Mohamed Mansour, founding partner and chairman of the club.
“We hope that San Diego FC can be a catalyst for culture, community and economic growth in San Diego,” he said. “We want to be more than just a soccer club. We want to be a cornerstone of this great community.”
Mayor Todd Gloria also addressed the crowd, congratulating Sanders and the soccer club, and urging business leaders to work with him to accomplish “big and bold things” for the city.
The chamber’s new board chair is Chris Howard, CEO and president of Sharp HealthCare, who officially began his year of service on Thursday.
The chamber is the he largest local business organization on the West Coast, representing more than 2,000 businesses and an estimated 300,000 job.
