UC San Diego entered Thursday’s game against CSU Northridge on a nine-game win streak, and the Tritons were able to hold off the Matadors all game long to extend that streak to double digits with a 77-71 road win.

The Matadors kept it close the entire game, as CSUN was looking to gain ground in the Big West standings. CSU Northridge entered in third place in the conference, but they were unable to topple the top-seeded Tritons.

UC San Diego built a comfortable lead multiple times in each half, which started with an 11-0 run in the last few minutes of the first half. Both teams had similar shooting percentages in the first 20 minutes, which saw the Tritons take a 37-30 lead at the break.

Many more three-pointers started to fall in the second half for both teams, but the Tritons saw the clutch buckets go in its favor. UC San Diego nailed 13 threes on the night compared to seven for the Matadors.

Nordin Kapic came up clutch in the second half, particularly in the final minutes. Kapic, who finished with 15 points, went 3-6 from beyond the arc, and all threes came in the second half.

Kapic was fouled with under a minute to go and the Tritons up four, but missed both free throws. CSU Northridge cut the lead to two on its next possession, and Kapic redeemed himself with a tough layup to all but seal the victory.

Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones once again led the Tritons in scoring with 20 points, and UC San Diego improved to 25-4 on the season. The team further solidified its NCAA Tournament positioning ahead of the Big West tournament.

The Tritons have one day off before the team dives into a three games in seven days stretch to close out the regular season. The first game is Saturday at home against Cal State Fullerton, which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. PST.
