Historic Roller Coaster to Be Imploded This Week: Fans React

The onetime world’s fastest and tallest roller coaster will soon be no more.

Kingda Ka, located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J., is set to be imploded on Friday, Feb. 28, between 9 and 10 a.m., per a post on Facebook from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

“There will be a series of rapid explosions,” the post warns, adding, “the noises my be startling, but please don’t be alarmed. Keep pets indoors if they are sensitive to loud sounds. If you or someone you know is affected by loud noises, take the necessary precautions.”

The super coaster has been out of commission since the end of the 2024 season and Six Flags officials previously announced it would be demolished, per NJ Advance Media. When it debuted in 2005, it was the tallest and fastest coaster in the world.

In 2010, Formula Rossa at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi took over the title of the fastest and Falcons Flight at Six Flags Quddiya in Saudi Arabia is now the tallest following the closure of Kingda Ka, according to NJ.com.

To help fill the void, Six Flags Great Adventure recently announced that it’s opening a new roller coaster, known as The Flash: Vertical Velocity, later this year. In addition, a “mutlti-world-record-breaking launch roller coaster” is set to replace Kingda Ka in 2026.

Still, fans are mourning the loss of the beloved roller coaster, with one poster on X, formerly Twitter, calling the destruction of the attraction “heartbreaking honestly."

"i grew up going to this six flags ALL the time (i lived 20 mins away) and this was my favorite ride. i used to count how many times i rode it and it was 60+. literally so many memories made while waiting in line w my friends in middle school. my AIM screen name even had the words 'kingada ka' in it," they added.

“this was one if my all time favorite rides! from riding it during its opening season back in the day to using up my free skip the line passes to get to the front row, i'll miss it.... ?,” posted another fan.

“Only went on it once and it was awesome,” added another.

“We need a dislike button for this!” another person added.
