A San Diego man who sold fentanyl that caused the overdose deaths of two men pleaded guilty Thursday to federal fentanyl distribution charges.
Jonathan Tyler Gauthier, 26, admitted to selling the drugs that led to the Sept. 7, 2022 death of a 24-year-old man, and three months later, the death of a 27-year-old man.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that in both instances, the victims communicated with Gauthier about drug sales shortly before their deaths.
The first victim, identified only as S.M.G., was found dead in the bedroom of his Hillcrest home. Prosecutors say Gauthier had sold him drugs for at least three years, but one day before the victim was found dead, Gauthier warned him that the fentanyl he just sold was particularly strong.
“Ur being careful,” he texted his customer at 8:49 p.m. on Sept. 6. At 9:12 p.m., S.M.G. responded “Yes.” Eight hours later, officers found him dead.
The second victim, identified as J.A.W., died at a Clairemont residence, with a pipe and a clear bag with eight pills containing fentanyl near his body, prosecutors said.
J.A.W. began to message the defendant on Dec. 18, 2022, seeking to purchase “blues,” counterfeit pills often containing fentanyl. Over the course of the next four days, J.A.W. and Gauthier exchanged messages until settling on a price of $80 for 10 pills.
The man’s body was found on the early morning of Dec. 24, about 12 hours after he returned home from picking up the drugs at Gauthier’s storage unit.
Gauthier is slated to be sentenced May 30.
