‘What a shot’ – Michigan State drain improbable halfcourt buzzer-beater to stun Maryland ahead of March Madness

THE Maryland Terrapins were left devastated on Wednesday night after losing on a buzzer-beater a halfcourt shot.

Michigan State barely escaped a road game against Michigan with a win after draining one of the craziest shots of the season.

With the game tied at 55 and seconds ticking off the clock, it appeared Maryland would get the last chance to win in overtime.

However, Maryland’s Ja’Kobi Gillespie fired his three-point attempt early, with more than four seconds left on the clock.

The rebound went right to Michigan State’s Jaxon Kohler who quickly dumped the ball off to Tre Holloman.

Holloman took just one dribble before firing off the hail mary shot from beyond the half court line.

Amazingly, the shot nearly swished through the basket to give Michigan a 58-55 win over Marlyand at the buzzer.

Play-by-play announcer Jay Horowitz was on the call for the game and couldn’t believe the sequence he was seeing.

“Holloman looks the clock, halfcourt for the win,” he said as the shot went up.

Once the shot went in, Horowitz and his partner couldn’t stop themselves from screaming “OHHHHHH!”

    “Oh, my goodness,” Horowitz said.

“Holloman from halfcourt to win it on the road.”

The Michigan State players dogpiled Holloman after his game-winning shot.

Meanwhile, the Maryland team looked on disbelief.

College basketball fans couldn’t believe the shot either, and shared their thoughts on social media.

“What a shot,” one fan said.

“MARYLAND WHAT HAPPEND,” another fan said.

    New rights deal

The NBA signed an 11-year deal with three networks for the league's rights from the 2025-26 season.

And there will be no games on TNT for the first time since the network launched in 1988.

The Walt Disney Company will continue to show the league with 80 regular-season games across ESPN and ABC.

They will also show around 18 playoff games from the first and second round, a Conference Finals series for 10 of the 11 years, and remain the home of the NBA Finals.

NBC will return as an NBA broadcaster for the first time since 2002.

The network will show up to 100 games per season across it’s channels and Peacock streaming service.

It will also be the home of NBA All-Star and show approximately 28 playoff games from the first and second round.

NBC will show one Conference Finals Series for six of the 11 years, rotating with new broadcaster Amazon Prime.

Amazon will show 66 NBA regular-season games including one on Black Friday.

The streaming service is also the home of the latter stages of the NBA Cup and the entire Play-In Tournament.

Prime will also broadcast around one third of the playoff games in the first and second round.

“The sound of that hitting the back rim and going down is incredible,” a third fan said.

Even Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo acknowledged after the game how improbable the shot was.

“That was a lucky shot,” Izzo said.

“But nobody can say we didn’t deserve to win this game. I mean, we made some bad mistakes.

“Give them credit. We threw the ball away a little bit and everything. But we deserved to win this game. To come into this place. I’m so proud of my guys.

“Tre made the big turnover and he made the lucky shot. But we deserved to win. I’m not taking that as a lucky shot.”
