CIF-SS GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS

    CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

    Friday at El Modena High

    OPEN DIVISION

    Santa Margarita (16-1-3) vs. Corona Santiago (21-2-2), 7:15 p.m.

Outlook: The third-seeded Eagles face the No. 5 Sharks in the Open Division final for the second consecutive season. Last year, Santiago Corona won 2-0 by scoring on a deflection and penalty kick. Santa Margarita earned some redemption the following week by beating Santiago in penalty kicks for its second straight CIF Southern California Regional Division 1 title. Sophomore forward Felicity Nguyen has 21 goals for Santa Margarita, which is seeking a record ninth section title.

    Friday at La Habra High

    DIVISION 6

Whittier Christian (14-5-3) vs. Thacher of Ojai (13-1-4), 7 p.m.

Outlook: The top-seeded Heralds face a Thacher team riding a 17-match unbeaten streak. The Tri-Valley League champion hasn’t lost since its season-opening game against Santa Barbara. Lauren Gravitt has four goals and four assists in the playoffs for the Heralds, who have reached their first section final. The senior captain scored the winning goal in overtime to lift Whittier Christian past Segerstrom 1-0 in the semifinals.

    Saturday at El Modena High

    DIVISION 1

    Mater Dei (13-6-4) vs. Troy (15-2-2), 6 p.m.

Outlook: It’s a clash of top defenses. Crestview League champion Troy hasn’t allowed a goal in regulation or overtime in the playoffs. Mater Dei, which placed fourth in the four-team Trinity League, has allowed three goals in the playoffs in regulation and overtime. “I believe whoever scores first has a huge advantage,” said Los Alamitos coach Pat Rossi, whose team played both schools. “Anything can happen but I feel Mayer Dei can do it in regular time. If it goes overtime, Troy will want to go PKs, where they have an advantage.” Troy goalie Ava de Leest, a Boise State commit, has blocked seven penalty kicks in the past two matches. Mater Dei goalie Kennedy Briseno (Chico State) has 10 shutouts.

    DIVISION 4

    Sage Hill (12-3) vs. La Mirada (13-8-3), 10:30 a.m.

Outlook: The youthful Lightning make their finals debut against four-time champion La Mirada. Sage Hill features several freshmen, including leading scorer Keila Fukuda (16 goals) and Jaden Rall (five goals). Junior goalie Finley Maynard has played well in the postseason for the Lightning.

    DIVISION 3

    At Veterans Stadium, Long Beach

    Foothill (12-7-4) vs. Long Beach Poly (14-3-1), 3:30 p.m.

Outlook: The Knights have reached their first section final after finishing third in the North Hills League, the lowest-ranked of the three leagues in the Century Conference. Foothill, however, flashed its potential by reaching the semifinals of its Excalibur tournament in late December. In the playoffs, Foothill’s strong sophomore class has emerged. Lili Reid, a sophomore, scored the winner in semifinals against Portola. Pacifica coach Mike Sutton, whose team lost to Long Beach Poly in the second round, said the Moore League champion is fast and aggressive. “They love to use their size to aggressively push players off the ball,” he said. “They rely mostly off set pieces to score.” Sutton added a key to watch Saturday in the stands. “(The Jackrabbits) feed off the energy of their fans’ energy,” he said.
