Josh Giddey’s first season with the Chicago Bulls has reached a new peak.
In what has largely been an up-and-down year for the 22-year-old guard, his most recent three-game stretch is a perfect encapsulation of why the Bulls were so keen on acquiring him this past offseason. Giddey is averaging 25.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.7 blocks during what is arguably the best stretch of his career. Most importantly, despite the Bulls losing two of those three games, Giddey has finished as a plus-contributor in every one of those matchups.
An Excellent Stretch By Josh Giddey
What has jumped off the screen most has been his aggressive scoring mentality. With Zach LaVine out of the picture, a switch has seemingly flipped in the jumbo guard. He is showing very little hesitation when it comes to attacking defenses downhill. While he’s never been the most efficient finisher, he has finally seemed to embrace a level of physicality we haven’t seen before. A six-foot-eight guard, he consistently finds himself with the size advantage and has used that to force contact. He’s been a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line during these three games, and he’s taken at least six free throw attempts in four of his last five games.
Likewise, these three games have been a good reminder of Giddey’s solid season from behind the arc. Year-over-year consistency is going to be key, but he’s shooting a career-high 37.0 percent from long range on roughly 4.0 attempts per game this season. We’ve now seen him splash at least three makes in four straight games for the first time this season.
© Brett Davis-Imagn ImagesWhile the scoring uptick has been encouraging, the defensive intensity has also been noticeably different. The guard has been an eyesore at times on that end of the floor, and we’ve even seen head coach Billy Donovan bench him during closing time because of it. For the Bulls to feel completely comfortable keeping him in restricted free agency, they have to see signs of life on that side of the ball over the remainder of the season. This has been a good start, as he’s recorded a combined 13 steals and blocks during this three-game span. Once again, he’s welcoming the physicality around the basket and catching players off guard with his size.
The two-way effort has helped him put together a truly remarkable three-game box score, which OptaSTATS highlighted on Wednesday morning. According to their data, Giddey is the first player in NBA history to record all of the following numbers over a three-game stretch:
75+ points40+ rebounds20+ assists10+ made threes10+ stocks (steals + blocks)
Yes, I recognize that is a ridiculously specific stat, but I still think it represents how special of a talent Giddey can be. Let’s not forget that arguably the smartest front-office leader in the sports drafted him No. 6 overall for a reason. The upside with him remains extremely intoxicating, and one can only help that this small sample size is a sign of even better days ahead. We all know the Bulls need it!
