A Fresno County man was recently arrested in Ukiah after a standoff with officers in a bank parking lot, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
According to the UPD, officers were alerted by the city’s FLOCK system of cameras around 10:30 a.m. Feb. 22 that a stolen vehicle was in the area.
After dispatchers verified that “the Mazda CX-5 SUV had been reported stolen by Enterprise Rental Car,” officers responded and located the vehicle in the Rite Aid parking lot at the intersection of South State and Gobbi streets with a man inside.
“Due to the propensity of vehicle thieves carrying weapons, a high-risk felony stop was attempted,” the UPD explains in their press release describing the incident, which also identified the suspect as George G. Rathwick, 62, of Riverdale, which is located in Fresno County.
“But Rathwick put the stolen vehicle into reverse, backed up, and drove out of the parking lot,” the UPD reports, adding that Rathwick then “pulled into the parking lot of the Chase Bank, because as he later told the officers, it was an open parking lot where he could force the officers into shooting him without putting anyone else in danger.”
The UPD reports that “a standoff ensued in the Chase Bank parking lot, and Rathwick told the officers that he was armed with a firearm and intended to shoot himself. UPD Officers spent several minutes speaking with Rathwick to deescalate the situation, and Rathwick eventually exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.”
The UPD reports that while Rathwick was “not found to be in possession of a firearm,” a search of his person did reveal “a baggie of methamphetamine,” and that the suspect “told the officers that he had spent a great deal of time in prison, and he had told himself that if he was ever in trouble with the law again, he was going to die before being sent back to prison.”
Rathwick was then arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest by force or threat, and possession of a controlled substance, and “the stolen Mazda was towed and stored so that it could be returned to Enterprise Rental Car.”
