While Ryan Poles did not name names when discussing his plans for NFL free agency, the Chicago Bears general manager provided an inkling of what he was thinking.
This is what Ryan Poles had to say when speaking to the media members who descended upon Lucas Oil Stadium and the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis:
Ryan Poles on the Bears' potential pursuit of a top-of-the-market free agent: "The clearer the vision, the more aggressive you can be, and that's important. You want to be selective in free agency … But if there are certain players that hit all the check boxes that you need,…

My read here is that Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles’ plan for NFL free agency might be best described as selectively aggressive. Those two concepts might clash. But they make sense in my head. Hear me out…
Bears GM shares team’s NFL free agency plan
If the Bears’ general manager is ready to be aggressive when NFL free agency opens on March 10, when the negotiation period kicks off, then I will be ready to see where the chips fall. Chicago’s football team is armed with nearly $80 million in cap space and has a handful of positions that clearly need filling. Traditionally, teams that have gobs of money and clear starting spots to offer to players tend to get their guys. I expect that trend to continue in 2025.
As for if Ryan Poles’ words were intended to reach any players in particular, I can understand why one would assume Chicago’s GM might have been referencing Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat, Atlanta Falcons center Drew Dalman, or any number of other free agents who could break the bank and reset the market. But more than anything, I feel as if Poles’ statements about the Bears’ plans for the upcoming transactional period were a verbal memo to agents around the league saying that Chicago’s football team is open for business when NFL free agency opens up in March. And if you’re a Bears fan, you should be excited about this development.

It would be malpractice if this offseason’s transaction period began anywhere but in the trenches. Offensive line is the highest priority need for Chicago’s football team. As of right now, the only projected starters on that unit are right tackle Darnell Wright, center Ryan Bates, and left tackle Braxton Jones. Of the three returning Bears linemen with starting experience, Wright is the only one who ended the 2024 season healthy. Both Bates and Jones finished the year with season-ending injury issues. Poles and his front office need to find two starting guards and a starting center this offseason. Doing so would push Bates off the starting line and into a swing reserve role, which suits him better.

On the other side of the line, parting ways with DeMarcus Walker (29 starts over the last two seasons) last week means that this team could use a starting defensive end to pair with returning starter Montez Sweat. Judging by what new Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen was hinting at during his introductory press conference, I would venture to guess that reeling in an impact defensive end ranks high on the offseason to-do list. And based on Head Coach Ben Johnson echoing those sentiments during his Tuesday press conference, I am expecting a notable splash at that position.
All in all, things are lining up for the Bears to be a power player when NFL free agency begins in March. If Ryan Poles can thread the needle and hit his marks, then we could look back on this as a transformational offseason for this franchise. But if he misses and mismanages the cap, then it could set the franchise back. Either way, it should be a fascinating time ahead for the Bears and a fanbase that is desperate to see fresh faces (and improvement) on the field.
